"The focus this week for Student 1's session was critical thinking about his reading. We read the article of the week I gave him for homework and spent time underlining the most important part of each paragraph that summarized the paragraph. He worked on stopping after each paragraph to think about it, and map out the progression of the article in his head so that he is really thinking about what he is reading and interacting with it, rather than just reading it. We practiced the same skills- slowing down, thinking about the reading, and underlining key parts- with a practice star passage. Then we worked through the questions together. He did a great job picking up on the new strategy and using it on his own. For Student 2's session we focused primarily on handwriting practice as well as some reading comprehension. He does very well in all subjects so our primary goal was working on taking his time to do careful work. He practiced writing his letters so that his handwriting will be more legible. While we were reading, he continued to work on slowing down and making sure he does not pass by words he doesn't know, but rather tries to understand them using context clues."
"The student and I started our session with vocabulary. He chose to start with the letter P by randomly opening his book. After vocabulary, we read a story in our workbook about daddy penguins. Toward the end of the workbook, we had to come up with our own story. Last but not least, we played our dice game for the visualizing stories."
"With a group of three boys, we practiced textual analysis on an informational text today with my guidance. Then we worked together on answering multiple choice questions about the text with me modeling some questions, and having the boys to then use the technique I had used. Finally, the boys worked independently on a second informational passage and answered the questions on their own with an emphasis on time management, making sure that they completed everything within the time limit. We quickly reviewed the answers and discussed glows and grows from the session."
"The student and I worked on vocabulary and context clues. He had a wonderful attitude, as he always does when it comes to having a genuine desire to complete material/ assignments. He did well with focus today. I showed him how to recognize which type of context clues are being used in sentences, how to detect them, etc."
"We covered the essay portion of the ACT. The student was very positive and very intelligent and easily caught on to the goals of the essay portion. He will be taking his ACT soon and scores will hopefully reflect the work he has put in for studying for this test."
"The student had a fair amount of homework tonight, so we spent the whole time on that. I first reviewed her homework; only 3 answers wrong out of 4 worksheets. We then reviewed her vocabulary words and Civil War notes for tests this Friday."
