Session Summaries by Languages Tutors

Buena Park, CA Languages tutoring
Today we took an opportunity to practice working on the present tense conjugations. We started with some flashcards to practice conjugations of the present tense, both regular and irregular verbs. After that, we spent some time working online to continue the practice of the present tense irregular verbs using some online exercises. We also spent some time working on reading comprehension, translating a story from Spanish to English and answering some comprehension questions. I challenged the student to write a response to the short reading we did in class today.

We began with a review of direct object pronouns, which he learned last week. He struggled with it during our last session, so I had him do a fill-in-the-blank translation activity that reminded him how DOPs are used in Spanish. While he did this first activity, I checked over his homework. He only completed the homework halfway, which was to write sentences in the cheat sheet. I typed in my edits and requests for more sentences, so that is what he will be assigned tonight. We learned affirmative tu commands today as a new grammar item and did a lot of practice on both of these topics.

We practiced speaking in Spanish using conversational topics which used several different verb tenses. We also reviewed preterite vs imperfect verb tense and looked at sentences and a paragraph in which she had to decided which verb tense to use and had to conjugate it correctly. Next, we reviewed the subjunctive. We looked at several sentences and she had to decide if subjunctive or present tense was appropriate and then had to correctly conjugate it. Last, we read two fairy tales in Spanish and answered comprehension questions at the end. The student and I took turns reading so she got practice in both active listening and reading skills.

By reading a passage we uncovered old vocabulary that the student has forgotten along the way. We reviewed these words, and I assigned homework on them. Also, we worked on comprehension of text without knowing the translation of every word. Allowing for the use of context to help with a general understanding.

The student and I reviewed and did homework exercises focusing on four subject areas: (1) direct object pronouns (it, them), (2) indirect object pronouns (me, you), (3) possessive adjectives (e.g. my, your), and (4) possessive nouns (e.g. mine, yours). As we went over her homework exercises, she seemed to grasp easily when and how to use each of the pronouns and adjectives. She struggled a little (but mot much) with the indirect object pronouns. As usual, she seems enthusiastic about learning the language. She told me she had recently been tested on a set of vocabulary that she and I had reviewed 2 weeks ago. I as glad to hear that she had scored above 90 on that test.

We focused on reading comprehension. We read the text in the book titled Rosa. The student likes to read it sentence by sentence and then translate it then we went over the general idea of each paragraph and then page. The story was sort of confusing, but it was very good practice for him since there were a lot of words that he needed to infer the meaning of and figure the tenses out. I feel that this was an overall very successful session.
