Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Worked with fourth grader on reading comprehension of directions. Took mini quiz to show how important it is to read and reread for understanding. Played a game with both boys on synonyms and word meanings. Did kids' writing with 2nd grade student. Made outline of first, next, then, and last to help form sentences and structure a paragraph."
"To begin today's session, the student and I reviewed the steps to complete in answering the essay. She then completed a sample essay. We then completed several math problems."
"The three of us worked on Writing and Math practice. I informed the first student about doing Critical Reading for homework only now and then checking the answers in sessions. I also told her to take Practice Test 1 soon. We also had a discussion about college."
"Discussed goals for the SAT with student and parents; discussed basic strategy of the test and preparation for it. Worked on grammar and verbal exercises to assess student's level."
"The student and I began the session with some math practice. This was the end of the math section in Practice Test in our book; the Student did the last 11 problems in the test and then we went through them together. We really talked about attempting each problem and doing work in the margins so that it's easier to eliminate at least one answer choice per item. We then did three reading passages; for the first time, I told the student when the average time per section (8.5 minutes for reading) had passed. We will continue doing this for reading/English sections so that the student begins to develop a sense of the timing for each section."
"The student and I reviewed ACT math and discussed ACT science. We reviewed areas he struggles with in math and then did a trigonometry review of about 30 minutes. We discussed strategies for getting started on problems that appear difficult at first glance, and we talked about time management. It is very important that the student continues to practice his math. We also demystified the science section -- the more the student understands about the content of science (charts, tables, etc.), the better off he will be. He got off to a great start and will spend the majority of next session reviewing what he has learned."
"Today both students and I went over vocabulary and grammar for their current chapter in their text. We created sentences that coincided with their homework assignments. We practiced pronunciation and discussed good study strategies for learning new verbs. We also discussed a tentative time frame for their next test."
"Precalculus final review: covered all of probability, most of statistics and logarithms, as well as rational functions, and exponential and interest growth. We went over a lot, but the student did a great job keeping focused, even on material she hadn't been in class for."
"We continued to work on the student's book project this week. I read what he had written and we made some changes. I looked for proper tense, subject/verb agreement, etc. We also went through the instructions to make sure each direction was followed and all information was included. After making some minor changes we talked about how to speak well in front of others. We discussed: practicing the speech beforehand, dressing professionally, considering the audience and relating to them, proper eye contact, talking at a good pace, etc. I imagine that he will do very well presenting this book to his class."
"We spent more time on essay writing and vocabulary. I had the student write another essay. I reviewed it and gave her feedback, which included essay writing strategy. We also worked on synonym questions and talked through a lot of vocabulary."
"Due to testing and no homework, the student and I played several math games. We replayed the dice game from the session before, and then we practiced some multiplication facts."
"We reviewed quantitative comparisons to get a feel for how they're set up, then worked on a couple reading comprehension passages. I left the student with a timed practice test of each section to be completed over the next week or so. He is doing a good job improving with each session and he's more and more comfortable with the types of questions on the test."
