The student and I discussed two upcoming assignments. The first is an extra credit assignment where she has to compare one of George Orwell's papers on language with a contemporary politician. We chose topics for this paper and discussed what she can write about and how to go about it; she felt confident that she could write a good paper based on what she chose. The second assignment is her senior research paper. She already has most of her sources picked and has a good plan to get the rest. She was unhappy with the idea she gave for her proposal, so we honed in on her idea and spent the majority of the time discussing what topics she could include in her paper. When we finished, she was feeling much more confident about writing her research paper. She also has a test on 1984 tomorrow and feels very confident about it.

The student continued working on using blending, letter correspondence and context to read difficult words in a passage. He was able to sound out difficult words such as conversation and dialogue. We finished reading Chester's Way and I asked him to make inferences about the text using the words and pictures, and he was able to infer information and meaning as well as recall details that he read. We reviewed phonetics rules. We also talked more about silent letters such as K in knot and E in kite. He was very excited about the large stack of word cards that he was able to read, including many that he was unable to read before. In the next session, we will continue reading Duck in a Truck, while paying attention to rhyming and letter patterns.

The student and I continued to work on essay writing skills for her college application essays. We also discussed the essay assignment her English class is currently working on, thinking through her examples and the new organizational structure her teacher has assigned. We then worked on some careful reading and problem-solving activities in order to continue to work on critical thinking skills for her upcoming AP tests and ACT. She continues to do really well. She's a good thinker and has lots of interesting ideas for her essays.

Today, the student learned that when a word ends in the letter "e," the vowel in the middle of the word says its own name. For example: bike, kite, cake, shake. We used only a/I examples, and we will be using different examples next time to review the topic. We read three passages today. He did well on all of them in terms of reading skills and comprehension. For next session, I might start with a shorter passage of his choosing and have the passages get longer and harder throughout the session so he is more motivated to keep going.
