Session Summaries by Science Tutors

Buckeye, AZ Science tutoring
Our first session focused on chapter 16 of the text, acid-base chemistry. I read the chapter in advance and presented the student with a four-page summary of the salient material that she will need to know for class assessments. We then moved on to calculating the pH of weak acid solutions, utilizing the acid dissociation constant (Ka) for acetic acid in an equilibrium process. The student is exceptionally bright, and exhibited instant understanding and mastery of the material covered.

The student was unable to go to class last week due to the flu, so I did a mini-lesson on how to find the amount heat added to/released from a reaction, both in phase change scenarios and in steady state scenarios. After showing her the two main equations (q = m*C*(change in T; q = m*(heat of vaporization/fusion), she then proceeded to work on her homework problems. She covered about 20 problems on this day, and she gained the general gist of the problems over time. By the end of the session, she seemed more confident in this material than with other material that we have covered. She was self-initiated for the most part, and was able to complete most of the problems with accuracy.

The student and I went over incorrect items on her former exams. We covered a broad range of topics, including anatomical position terms, distal/ proximal, medial/ lateral, superior/ inferior, and anterior/ posterior. We reviewed the nine regions of the abdomen; action potentials and phases of an action potential, including depolarization, repolarization, and hyperpolarization; ventral body cavities, the abdomen and thorax; brief urinary physiology -- pressure changes driving the movement of blood between glomerulus and Bowman's capsule, and osmolarity changes.

The student and I went over ionic bonding and properties of ionic compounds. We also introduced covalent and metallic bonding, which are the next topics he will be doing in class. He seems to be doing well with the material so far, and so we have been focusing on staying ahead of the next lectures he will be getting in school so that he is prepared going into each class. I also told him to read Chapter 6 in his textbook, as it is very relevant to the work he is doing in class and it would be good reading for him to do over break.
