For our first session, I had the student read documents and respond to multiple choice questions taken from the a previous year's grade 8 test. He read each document aloud and responded to the questions. We then went over his responses, and I asked him to describe his approach to more challenging questions to get a better sense of what was unclear to him. We then went back over the document to check for any unfamiliar vocabulary. He seemed to have the most difficulty with questions using qualifying words like best, most, main, etc., as well as more nuanced vocabulary questions. I saw a sample of his writing, which looked quite good, and I left him with a short writing assignment to complete before our next session. Moving forward, we'll work to develop his vocabulary, build his confidence with multiple choice questions, and polish his writing.

Today I tutored the student in reading and math. We started the session with math, by reviewing graphing work she had previously completed. The answers had been covered up, so I asked her the same questions on the graphing practice sheet to see if she could still find the correct answers. I also asked her other questions about graphing that were not on the sheet (what was each graph showing, etc.). She did very well with this. We also practiced her addition flashcards. After math practice, I had the student practice her spelling words. She didn't have any trouble with these words and got them all correct. She then read pages 18-41 in her "Frog and Toad" book. She did well reading, struggling on some words (mostly words that cannot be sounded out/ have odd patterns), but was able to sound them out either on her own or with help. As we read the chapter called "Shivers," I asked her questions to check for comprehension, which she responded to well. To aid with comprehension, for part of the book, I would read the same pages she had just read back to her, so she could have the opportunity to listen to the story and think about the plot and characters, rather than trying to do this while she tries to decode words.

Today we continued adding leaves and words to our last sight word project, which is a Christmas tree. We only have a handful of words left, so we are making tremendous progress. We also read a few more pages in "Scrambled Eggs Super!" today. The student is starting to recognize more and more words in the text, even words that are not on our list of sight words. She is getting a lot better about knowing the difference between "the," "that," "they," and "there."

I gave the student a practice test to see how he reads and what he struggles with. He struggles with fluency, and vocabulary which sometimes causes him to struggle with comprehension. I spoke to his mom about a vocabulary book and a reading book that I recommended she buy for him to practice. I told them that he needs to get practice reading out loud to improve vocabulary and fluency. Mom did show me his grades and information from the school about testing.

I had the student read a new passage for fluency. WCPM was 92. We reviewed the components of fluency on a rubric and I had him track his score on a graph. I assessed more high frequency words and added to his sets of cards (read only). I had him trace over the words on cards with a marker and highlighter for spelling and reading. I did an HFW card drill with him; then I dictated HFW cloze sentences for spelling and gave a pretest for ai words.
