Session Summaries by Mandarin Chinese Tutors

Buckeye, AZ Mandarin Chinese tutoring
The student was assigned a portion of the novel "Como agua para chocolate" to read in Spanish and translate for context and understanding. The assigned reading was quite lengthy with complex subject matter and many new vocabulary words. We worked through the reading paragraph by paragraph. She would read each paragraph aloud in Spanish, and then we would go through the paragraph by translating together and building a context of the story and characters. At first, the process of translating and understanding the story line was slow. But by the end of the reading, her fluidity of reading and translating the story's context and development rapidly increased as she understood the story line. She did a very good job with a challenging task.

The student has many gaps in his Spanish learning. We made a list together of what he does and does not remember much of in relation to grammar. We made a list of 7 grammar tenses that he would like to work on. Out of those, we worked on the conditional tense. He was unable to tell me at first what it described, how it was formed, and what the irregulars were. However, at the end of the session (held in Spanish), he was able to communicate entirely in the target language answering questions with 100% accuracy. Awesome! I showed him a way to remember the irregulars by categorizing them into two categories ("d" and "ce/ec"). He copied the notes into a word document for later use. I have many conditional exercises that we will begin with next session.

We flipped through some of the material the student had previously learned and did some practice with telling time. The unit in the book combined this with school classes, so we did a little practice with that as well. We did this by looking at pictures, as well as with a makeshift clock that I had drawn on paper. After that, we did some work with places and things found throughout the city. We did a little bit of reading comprehension in between, and I helped clarify any confusions the student seemed to be having. For the final part of our session, we practiced stem-changing verbs such as pedir and servir, looking also at activities that focused on distinguishing between the two verbs. This concluded our session; I had her complete an exit slip for me.

We focused on the past tense, covering the difference between imperfect and preterite tense. I gave the student practice sentences to formulate and also worked on conversation practice. She left feeling accomplished and with a stronger comprehensive understanding of the past tense.

We focused today on present tense conjugations of -ar verbs and also pronunciation, which is a topic the student has requested to work on. We talked about the importance of making index cards with "conjugation trees" of verbs as a way to practice at least 10 minutes or so each day.
