Session Summaries by ISEE Tutors

Buckeye, AZ ISEE tutoring
This week we started looking at some reading comprehension and verbal sections. The student worked proficiently through these sections and we reviewed a strategy for sentence completion: looking for the important word. For example, if a sentence is: "ALTHOUGH Daniel is normally an excellent student, his recent test score was _______."ù In this sentence, ALTHOUGH is the important word, which tells you that you need to find the opposite of the test results of a good student. We continued to reading comprehension, which she did well overall with. We did more analysis of the "important word" with respect to a larger body of text. There was a topic about the Middle Ages and describing how RARE luxury was, even though most of the historical anecdotes from the day are luxurious. The article went on in much more detail about how terrible living conditions were for most people but then asked a question about why it's hard to understand that today. The answers contained decent choices like: technology is so much better today, how modern medicine has come so far, etc. but the best choice explained how COMMON luxury is today. When looking at questions like these, it's important to look for the "important word." We moved back to math after about half of the session. We reviewed percent increase and percent decrease, and graphical representation of problems and how important it is to understand what the different axes are. For example, one axis was "frequency"ù and another was "value"ù and it showed the reader how many times each value appeared in the data set. We reviewed the idea of symmetric data "about a point" (i.e. the data is symmetric about the value of 7). We also reviewed what range is, and why it wouldn't change if all the data points are raised by a fixed amount. We reviewed that squaring a negative number gives a positive number. We also reviewed the definitions of factors and multiples. We did a visual problem, of paper folding into a cube and what each of the faces of the cube would end up looking like. We finished by reviewing how to foil out two parentheses. [ex (x+y)(3x^2+4x-1)=3x^3+4x^2-x+3x^2y+4xy-y]

The student completed all the homework I assigned last time (a decent amount as requested). We started by going over the answers to it. She breezed through all verbal questions (all correct), so we focused on math, which needs more attention. Then we looked at the quantitative comparison questions and practiced those for the remainder of our session.
