Today I met the student and we had our first session. We discussed his education in general: his long term goals to go to medical school, his short term goals to get ahead in chemistry class, his past experience with chemistry and other courses, and his current experience at the university. We then looked at his upcoming fall curriculum and specifically the syllabus for his chemistry course. We talked about the resources he has and the coursework he can expect. He then made up a study schedule so that he will be prepared when the course starts, and we put together a tutoring schedule that accommodates his study schedule. We plan to meet twice a week, Monday and Friday, for two hours each session. Due to his being a college student, I gave him the flexibility to adjust which days we meet during the week as long as we discuss it ahead of time. Accordingly, we are meeting on Wednesday and Friday for next week so that he has some time to look at some problems in the earlier chapters. We also looked into the first chapter of the chemistry textbook that the course follows and worked on a problem to get the feel of things. He is a hard working student who is proactively getting ahead in work in preparation for the busy workload of a biology student desiring to get into med school. I am impressed with his organization and encouraged by his desire to learn. I expect great things and will continue to work with him and be a resource for his education.

We went over the main concepts for her upcoming exam. This included Lewis structures, resonance structures, molecular orbital theory, valence bond theory, and bonding. We worked through various practice problems that covered each topic, and discussed some concepts such as localization and delocalization of electrons. She struggled the most with resonance structure and hybrid orbitals, but I think by the end of the session it made more sense. I did not leave her with extra practice.

We went over the student's chemistry packet for his final exam. He performed very well in today's session, so I don't see a reason why he wouldn't ace his final. He even sent me pictures of the work he did, and it all looks good. Next week, we plan on reconnecting to talk about his exam for math. All in all, I have no worries about him.
