Buckeye, AZ Algebra tutoring
Since she has completed all of her reviews, we could move forward into a new chapter and practice. She is on Chapter 5 of her textbook, which focuses on concepts we have already practiced in additional worksheets I have given her in weeks past. This included a review of least common denominators, a new way to find the least common multiple, and of course, factoring.

Today we worked on a worksheet that he was given at school with problems involving quadratic polynomials and solving quadratic equations. We did these out loud together, but I didn't assist him in finding the right answer. He was able to get these all correct on his own. We spent the remainder of the session going over graphing quadratic functions. He tends to mix up when the parabola should open upwards or downwards, but he seemed to finally get a hang of it by the end of the session. It's great to see how far he has come and the confidence that he now has in math.

We worked through his second practice EOC. He is having issues with retention on many of the problem types, and, in order to combat this, I would like him to step up his practice and study regime in order to really get a feel for the question types that he will see on the exam. He will be taking quizzes every day along with reviewing homework that we do together, and this upcoming weekend he will complete another practice EOC.

The student and I went over a study guide homework assignment she was given. She had already completed most of it, and simply wanted to go over the questions she didn't get the right answers to, which she will be allowed to resubmit on Monday. We reviewed all the questions, as well as a bonus sheet she was given. She was eager to get to work. The study guide focused on quadratic equations and the different ways to solve them, including factoring, the perfect square method, and the quadratic formula. We looked at the work she did, and step by step we went over the solutions to get the right answers. Her main issue in this topic is in factoring and ensuring she is getting her signs correct. I told her to use the FOIL method to double check her work, and we did that each time she factored. Other topics on the study guide were finding the length of a line given two points and finding midpoint given two points. When I questioned what was gone over in class, she remembered she was given equations to find these answers. The student is very capable and smart, and she is eager to learn. She has a lot of energy, but is able to concentrate it on her work. The family is also keen to keep her environment geared towards studying when appropriate. For example, they brought the dog inside and quiet when it started barking at something while in the yard. I left her a link to a website with worksheets to practice, and asked her to keep in mind any questions that pop up. We will be going over those questions as well as creating her allowed cheat sheet on Monday when I return.

Topics we covered today: factoring, foiling, adding/subtracting polynomials, geometric sequences, exponential growth/decay She is getting better at determining the signs when factoring. We reviewed a way to find the other factors of a number once you know at least one. We went over the derivation of exponential growth and decay as well as the derivation for geometric sequences including explicit and implicit form. She can easily add and subtract polynomials but sometimes has issue with the signs.

Today the student and I continued to work on problems involving rational functions and polynomials. Many of the rational functions required graphing and finding critical values, intercepts, and asymptotes. Most of them also involved factoring and canceling out values. This section really is just combining all of the concepts that the student has learned up to this point, and as a result, he is not struggling with the actual mathematic operations. I left him with quite a few homework problems left to work through as the nature of these problems means they take up a lot of time. The session was still productive, and I left him some detailed, worked examples for him to consult over the weekend.
