We reviewed the valuation and record method of stock transactions, including the sale and repurchase of common and preferred stock as well as the sale of bonds with detachable warrants, conversion of preferred stock into common stock, the recording of stock option transactions and retirement and cancellation of Treasury shares. We discussed the payment of dividends, and addressed what it means for the transaction valuation of the preferred stock is cumulative or noncumulative and participating or non participating. The student was very attentive and had done a lot of work to grasp what concepts he could prior to our meeting. I was impressed with the progress he made prior to our tutoring session. I encouraged him to utilize T-accounts and ledgers to accumulate information to solve complex multi-step entries. I also suggested he read the test question first, and get centered on what information he would need and what accounts will be affected prior to reading the facts of the problem. I also suggested he identify what accounts will net to zero at the end of the transaction cycle, and what the underlying purpose of the transaction was. I provided him with a matrix of transactions with Debit and Credit calculations so that he can study what accounts are affected for each kind of transaction and how the amounts are calculated.
