Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had a slightly abbreviated session today, so we took only a quick glimpse at his new textbook (Mandarin Level 2, Routledge) and devoted most of class to a flashcard-story we had started the previous week. His homework is to read back through the story on his own. He could pronounce every word and translate the grammar by the end of class today...a real achievement."
"Today we focused on learning and analyzing words and characters; we made flashcards with all the words the student needs to prepare for his homework, and we broke down each character and explained why they look the way they are and what are the "tricks" to memorize them. The student has not been practicing Pinyin lately, so we also spent some time on practicing the tones and the pronunciations of the words. The homework is to finish the flashcards and keep practice pinyin."
"We continued to work on the unit 2 PowerPoint slides. We did more practice on speaking and listening. I also encouraged the student to seek more exposure to Chinese, its culture, and history by reading Chinese newspapers and/or watching Chinese TV shows and movies. He has learned a lot of vocabulary and phrases in the classroom but lacked experiences in the real-life usage of Chinese. As usual, he was very focused and engaged. Due to the slow pace of the class in school, I will meet with him only once a week starting next week. No concerns!"
"We covered lesson 6 - pets. We learned about various animals and the verbs "like" and "have." We build on the lesson to create a simple dialogue asking each other what kind of animals we like or what kind of animals we have. He did a good job this week staying focused and engaged. He has trouble pronouncing the 3rd tone of pronunciation, so we will spend more time practicing that next week. He has excellent memories and was able to start to recognize the characters without the help of Pinyin. A pleasure to tutor!"
"We covered Pinyin, tones, characters (number 1-10), and special phrases. The student had a little struggle with the four tones, but got the hang of them at the end of the lesson. She seems to be an eager learner in Mandarin. I assigned two assignments to her: initial/ finals differentiation and character writing of the numbers 1-10."
"We did a review of counting 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. We also reviewed common greetings, expressions, and 2 common measure words. We then reviewed and practiced making sentences about name, age, grade, and asking questions about those."
