Session Summaries by Science Tutors

We reviewed questions from her biology study packet. It mainly covered the cell cycle and genetics with some mitosis and meiosis. It sounds like her class did not go into very much detail with some topics, so I tried to give a brief definition of as many terms as I could. We might meet again next weekend or for a longer session on Monday, but I will schedule everything ahead of time.

We reviewed for the student's upcoming final exam material, specifically the nomenclature of molecular and ionic compounds. We worked from worksheets on identifying the type of compound, and then using the correct naming system for either molecular or ionic compounds. We also practiced writing formulas of compounds from names. She seemed to understand and remember the subject by the time we had finished. Next we moved on to Le Chatelier's principle and used problems from the website to practice deciding what would happen to the system (shift left or shift right) when stress was placed on a system including pressure, adding and subtracting reactants and products, or changing the temperature of endothermic and exothermic reactions.

During this session we focused on preparing for the exams that the student has coming up, particularly in setting up a study plan. The student took a lot of initiative in setting his own deadlines and created a plan that would give him ample time to review the material with time to ask questions and focus on details. After this, we reviewed some topics that he inquired about. Namely, we reviewed how to complete empirical and molecular formula determinations from combustion reactions. The student seemed shaky with this at first, but recalled quickly the strategy and was able to complete successive problems with little trouble.

In this session, the student and I went over the gas laws and intermolecular forces. We tackled the various equations used to calculate volume, pressure, and temperature. In addition, we went over the concepts of how each is affected when a different variable is changed. In the session, the student was able to easily work on the math and set up the problems correctly. However, he struggled a bit on understanding how the concept worked, but it will only take a bit more practice and thought to get a mastery of it. In the session, I found demonstrating the principles using a plastic bag was effective.

Today the student and I began studying for her Biology exam next week. We went through all of her topics, including Cell Cycling, Cellular Respiration, Photosynthesis, and DNA. While studying, I quizzed her on facts as a way to test her knowledge. She did well overall, but will definitely need some work considering there is a lot of information on her test. Tomorrow, we will aim to finish all of the topics she needs to cover, and come up with some ways to best remember the material.
