Session Summaries by Pre-Calculus Tutors

Bristol, CT Pre-Calculus tutoring
Today, the student and I worked through more conic section problems. She still struggles with certain steps, particularly deciding what you need to add to the other side of the equation when completing the square and the sign for the factored portions. We were able to get through some of the practice problems. She is going to continue to practice on her own and email me if she has any questions. We have another session set up for next Tuesday night!

Today we covered functions. We learned how the x values and y values are affected if certain changes are made to the function. I explained it to the student using a table. He was initially struggling to understand it, but he eventually was able to learn it. We also learned how to FOIL using geometry. Moreover, we looked at a picture of a function, and found intervals for where function is increasing or decreasing, y values for certain x values, and x values for certain y values. He was eager to learn the material. I asked him to review the exponent rules.

I worked with the student on reviewing sequences and series, of both arithmetic and geometric types. She had a good understanding of the material that we went over together the year before. She just needed to understand how to do summation of series when it converges. I was able to work ahead of schedule with her.

This was our first session. The student seemed to remember most of his earlier math and already be in a good position, so we reviewed the next few topics in his class (graphs of circles and lines, polynomials, rational functions). He hasn't had any tests yet, but has been an A/B student in the past.

The student and I have been working on trig problems. We have been trying to get exposed to all formulas so that once the school year starts most of these problems will be familiar to him. We have also created note cards for him to keep throughout the year with have formulas and examples of problems.

Today was the first session, in which we reviewed the first chapter for the student's upcoming test this week. The topics included some review of algebra. Specifically we covered lines and using slope-intercept form as well as point slope form. We worked through problems in the chapter review. We solved problems finding equations of lines parallel or perpendicular to a given line. The remaining problem types we worked through covered functions and the definition of a function. We discussed the vertical line test, as well as determining a function numerically by looking at x,y values. We also reviewed classifying functions as even or odd as well as inverse functions and how to determine what the inverse of a given function is. Overall for the session, I gave her a few pointers on problems asking for the domain and range of a function. I also showed her how to use any form of the equation for a line and that they are all interchangeable. For the upcoming sessions, we will need to keep reviewing previous topics in algebra as she needed help with algebraic manipulation of equations such as adding or subtracting to both sides of an equation to solve for a variable when we worked through solving for an inverse function.
