Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Bristol, CT Latin tutoring
This session, we talked about the student's upcoming exam and began to review the grammatical concepts that he's shaky on. We started by discussing the tenses (explaining that each tense is comprised of time and action and reviewing possible translations for the tenses). Then, we talked about the sequence of tenses (explaining the subjunctive tenses that follow the indicative tenses and the translation of subordinate/subjunctive verbs as dependent on and relative to the main/indicative verb). Next, we reviewed two constructions (purpose clauses and indirect commands) that follow the sequence of tenses and worked through practice sentences for both. He told me he has been struggling with tenses and vocabulary, so we parsed verbs as we went and discussed translation strategies. I also recommended that he review vocabulary with flashcards and his declensions via the Latin library's online declension tool.

The student is doing very well! We went over his homework assignment for tomorrow, and he seemed to be able to translate very fluidly. When we went over more difficult grammatical constructions he was quick to grasp them and very receptive to learning new ways to translate. He's welcome to email me his homework if he'd like a last minute check-over and of course, as always, he is encouraged to email me with any questions he may have before our next session!

Today we jumped right into translating Latin. The student is bright and catches on quickly. We continued reading,  and he did a good job. We made it to the beginning of line 20 (so almost 9 lines), and I told him to prepare some lines for the next time we meet. If he translates/looks up the words ahead of time first, we will be able to go through the material with much more celerity than today. He seems interested and engaged still.

The student and I reviewed active, indicative verbs of the 1st and 2nd conjugation in anticipation of his second summer progress test (to be taken tomorrow). We gave particular attention to the aberrant grammatical forms that his teacher is emphasizing, namely, dative of the possessor and complementary/object infinitives. He understands the concepts and his teacher will notice his progress, which is what he is looking for. The material is cumulative, and his proficiency will increase as it recurs throughout our work this summer. He remained attentive throughout.
