Today, the student and I continued with "die Zahlen" or "the numbers." Last session, we practiced 1-20, and this time we got all the way up to 1,000. I created a series of practice problems for her to do in German, such as simple addition or subtraction sets to practice our numbers. She practiced both typing these numbers as well as saying them out loud.

Today, we focused on time. We learned various time words such as "am, pm, approximately, x:30" and focused on "ni" and "he" particles that dictate time and location. We practiced sentences, such as "What time is it?, It is ~o'clock, At x time I am going to Y, and I will be at Y at x time." We also practiced numbers 1-10 and did various examples of translating a time into English, as well as stating a time in Japanese. We also practiced verb conjugations of current, past, negative, and past negative. I sent her some children cartoons so he can practice his listening, as well as learn other words. Very productive session overall.

Since we hadn't met up for a while, we reviewed the verbs tabemasu, nomimasu, and suki desu, and practiced making and answering questions for each. We learned two new vocabulary sets: colors and weather. After learning and practicing color names, we asked and answered questions such as "What color do you like?" and "What color is ______?" After learning a few adjectives related to the weather such as hot, cold, sunny, cloudy, cool, we made sentences such as "Today is _____." He made a plan to have his daughters help him learn color names by making him color flashcards, and to carve out time to study this week. We made a plan to meet again on Thursday of this week.

The lesson began with a quiz over vocabulary words from previous lessons (the student aced it, naturally.) Then we practiced the more casual form of past tense (ta), and went on to the if/when form of verbs and adjectives (tara.) There was a lot of reviewing of vocabulary this lesson. The student powered through this as usual. She'll be speaking Japanese in no time once she gets to Tokyo. The homework for next week is to finish sentences that start with if/when clauses.
