Session Summaries by Biology Tutors

Bristol, CT Biology tutoring
We covered a great deal of vocabulary and concepts in preparation for the student's penultimate exam for the semester. To help with the remembrance of class, I taught him a couple of mnemonics and flow charts. We continued with the endocrine system that covered hormones such as insulin and diseases such as type I and II diabetes.

In this session we covered as much as we could of the student's final review, covering mitosis, meiosis, the cell cycle, DNA replication, transcription, translation, etc. There is still a lot to cover so the student should continue reviewing these topics and we will work on it more in the next session.

We went over an arthropod worksheet that the student had. I asked him questions about the material he just covered and answered everything well. He is doing well and I helped him find answers to certain questions that weren't in his PowerPoint.

We specifically covered evolution related topics - such as micro and macro evolution, bottleneck and founder effect, adaptations and speciation. The student and I talked about ways to remember the different types of speciation and went over examples on a large and small scale. We talked about real world examples and how those formed over time. The student was receptive and once we reviewed was able to come up with examples of her own.

The student and I worked through approximately 6 pages out of his 15 page final review packet for biology. The content of the 6 pages consisted of primarily cell biology including mitosis and meiosis, comparing mitosis to binary fission, crossing over (which occurs in meiosis) and defining cellular biology terms (i.e. DNA, gene, locus, allele, etc.). The student understood the content of the packet that we got through (seeing as it is all review). However, I do believe that he needs to review the content further on his own time outside of tutoring in order to solidify the information. We will continue working on his final review packet tonight and hopefully have time to review it.

The student brought her biology final review packet to the session. We worked to complete the packet, go over topics, and I spent the remainder of the time quizzing her over the material. She did well with remembering a large portion of the material. She was struggling to recall some material that had been more challenging for her in the past, but she seemed to be doing quite well with the subject matter at the end of our session, and should do well on her final as long as she looks over her review the night before her test.
