Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student and I looked at some essential geometric concepts that he will find on the SSAT. We talked about properties of angles and how to find each angle that is created by a line that intersects two parallel lines. We also discussed properties of different types of polygons, including triangles and quadrilaterals. He was a quick study with these concepts. He was especially good at figuring out the properties of triangles. We then wrote a practice essay . I was impressed by the improvements he showed in his first essay. He effectively used transition words to create a clear and coherent story. He only needed to be more specific with his details to write an excellent essay."
"For this session, our focus was on the student's preparation for the 2nd portion of Math as well as reviewing analogies and synonyms for her verbal section of the test. I encouraged her to use the annotation strategy and think carefully, writing out the information that is necessary to help her solve and answer questions correctly. Most often in our review when we look back at missed answers, she is able to solve them successfully when she uses the strategy provided. She must also learn the basic geometry formulas; she will need knowledge of these, especially on section 2 of the test."
"This was the last session before the student took the SSAT. In this session, I had him practice writing by choosing a subject and focusing on the brainstorming before he started to write his story. We also reviewed all of the general strategies for each section of the test. I recommended that he review the strategies that evening and before the test. I think that he progressed substantially in working through mental fatigue and frustrations, as well as writing out problems in the quantitative section with the extra practice."
"Today, the student worked on multiplying, adding, and subtracting mixed number fractions. He also worked on matching inequalities to the correct number line, and he did very well on this. He also worked on scientific notation and caught on very quickly. He also practiced factors and multiples and reducing fractions. He is doing very well working with fractions. He also practiced analogies and synonyms."
"The student and I reviewed the assigned study materials from the previous few weeks. She continues to focus hard and is making steady progress. While I wish she had more time to prepare given how new much of this information is I can definitely see progress. Her progress on the verbal section was especially noticeable. We have not worked much on the reading section thus far since she did better on that section from the diagnostic tests but I decided to touch on that for a while tonight. I also gave her a lesson on probability as she has not encountered that topic before for the math section. I discussed the importance of taking full-length practice with her and her mom and outlined the best way to go about that. She should take one full-length , timed practice test between now and our next session."
"We covered all of Diagnostic Test 1 Verbal and a few Math problems. The student is very smart. Of the three sections, he struggles with Math the most. For the next session, we are going to go over Diagnostic Test 1 Math and Diagnostic Test 2 Reading."
