Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We did a review of present tense, reflexives, and indefinite pronouns. For practice, the student will do exercises on reflexive, present tense, and body parts."
"Today I worked with Student 1 on a homework assignment on the importance of hygiene. This assignment was good practice for her new vocab words about daily routines, i.e. brushing teeth, showering, washing hair, etc. I only worked with her for 30 minutes today and spent 1.5 hours with Student 2. He and I went over the story he has been reading and vocab words. We talked about the theme of the story and practiced describing different parts of the story. He has a quiz this week, and I think he can do well. He agreed to go over the material a few more times on his own in the next few days."
"During this session, the student shared the news that he received a 100% on the conversation test that we had prepared for. On Friday, he will have another test, so we began reviewing topics in preparation. He went to his teacher and asked for an outline of what the test will cover, in order to get a head start. Based on this list, I asked him to choose the top three things that he felt were the most challenging so that we could most effectively use our time together. From the list, we practiced the preterite and present conjugation of the -gar/-car/-zar verbs. After this, we reviewed when to use reflexive verbs, and I had him do a practice exercise in his workbook where students have to choose whether a verb would be reflexive or non-reflexive based on the information in the sentence- and he did very well on this. We then spent a good deal of time on indefinite words, which caused a little confusion for him. I went through the differences between each word pair for both the positive and negative indefinite words, gave examples, and we did a few exercises. After completing this, we finished by starting at the beginning of the chapter and reviewing the grammar on each page. He has a great handle on all of the grammar and vocabulary for this particular chapter, and will have a good deal of study time before the actual test"
"By now, the student can identify letters in the alphabet and words associated to each with nearly 100% accuracy. In this session, we began reading in Spanish by reading short nursery rhymes. As we began finding the rhythm and she was able to say them repeatedly, her confidence grew. Afterwards, we reviewed her progress on the language app, and we completed a lesson so she can practice independently at home."
"We did a lengthy conversation on titles, degrees and educational vocabulary. The student was interested in knowing the words for a Bachelors, Masters and PhD. We discussed how the educational system is different in Latin American countries. He had to complete pages 277 thru 279 in my grammar book with sentences containing direct and indirect object pronouns. He only got 2 incorrect. I explained the preterite use of ser along with past participle for sentences with the passive voice. I showed him how the subject (or agent) of a sentence in the active changes in the passive voice. I showed him uses of Impersonal se in sentences as compared to the reflexive use. Our class today was very lively with animated conversation. We did intense linguistic discussions and the student was really interested and focused with the material we covered, as usual."
"Today we went over regular verb conjugations, as well as remedial questions and food related vocabulary."
