Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was my first meeting with the student so we talked about what had been discussed in his class so far and some of the things that he was struggling with understanding. We worked on his homework and I quizzed him on some of the terms to make sure he was understanding what he was writing. He was pretty confident with how organisms broke up into domains, kingdoms, etc. but he struggled with why this classification had to be the way it was so we talked about that a lot. Then we discussed terms and concepts from his natural selection unit."
"Today the student and I went over p waves, s waves, seismographs, earthquake activity, chemical weathering and physical weathering comparing and discussing how they work in tandem. We also discussed river systems, tributaries and other water forms. We discussed landslides, mudflows and other destructive forces of nature that depend on land formation and precipitation. The student is doing great with the material. She just needs some clarification on the topics she is learning in the classroom. We are just putting all the pieces of the puzzle together so to speak. She is going to email me with what she would like to cover in our next session as well as letting me know if she needs some extra assistance on anything during the week."
"During this session we went over equilibrium equations, calculations of k constants and using q to determine which direction shift will go. We worked on questions the student had for practice. Overall this session went well."
"We went over questions and concepts listed in the study guide, such as genomics and methods used to detect expression of genes and how to knock them out. We agreed that next session will be a review of the sections of the study guide that she does not understand after her professor's lectures. Also, I will review the PowerPoint slide notes that she will send to me today in order to get a sense of how in-depth the material is that is being covered. Also, in return, I have a couple of my own notes related to the subject which I will send to hopefully give more clarity on the concepts. Overall, great session!"
"We went over questions from an old exam to help prepare for the final exam next Tuesday. Some issues with acid-base reaction problems were addressed, and they will likely be the more important point to focus on Monday night before the exam. We also went over some other topics that haven't been visited yet, such as lattice energy, kinetics, gas laws, and chemical equilibrium. Overall, there is an increased understanding and comfort level with the material, which is a win, and Monday night we tentatively plan to cover any last-minute weak spots before the final."
"We went over questions from the student's final review guide. We covered mechanoreceptors, melanopsin receptors and the SCN, and ascending and descending pain signals and their modulation. Towards the end, we talked about sexual dimorphism and the effects of estrogen and testosterone on the neuronal circuitry. It was a very productive session."
