"The student's math teacher sent home another practice test with 20 assorted concept-based problems. We discussed 10 of them, creating a study guide with steps and concepts broken down. I saw he needed more work with linear equations and their corresponding graphs. We focused on how the m and b components of y=mx+b represent the slope and y-intercept. I showed him how to use b as a starting point and use m (rise over run) to plot additional points, as well as find the equation of the line. We also explored how slope intercept form of the equation of the line is used to create an input/output table for the given function."
"The student began our session today in a particularly good mood, still excited about his acceptance into college and also pleased with his 92 on his last math test. We continued with his homework for tonight, working on direct and inverse variation. Since the computational element of this is fairly simple, we focused on word problems - establishing the proper relationship and getting the numbers in the right places in the equations. We did also practice some of the computation (without their calculator) to work on being careful with calculations and minimizing unnecessary errors."
"Today we finished talking about factoring and the student showed marked improvement from the last session. We did both factoring of polynomials and the reverse process from the roots (FOIL). His assignment is to complete the next practice exam on Saturday morning and I will send him the answers after so he can grade it. We will meet again on Sunday to talk strategy and go over the exam"
"During this session, various algebra, geometry, and trig questions were reviewed from a giant study packet for the upcoming final exam."
"Today session with the student was mainly on solving past exams for practice. He informed me of his possibility of taking his practice exam next week. For preparation towards his practice, I assigned more practice questions for homework."
"We worked on some review, but we were mostly working on how to determine volumes and surface areas of solids. We got a lot covered. The student understands volumes well."
