Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed her homework, which included an algebra review of graphing absolute value functions and quadratic functions. She completed these using an x-y table. She seemed to remember exactly how to do this and was able to do this almost completely independently. In addition, we went over the first section of the first chapter which talked about parent functions and transformations of these functions. We talked about the vertical and horizontal shift, narrowing and widening of the graph, as well as the orientation of the graph and how each transformation was reflected symbolically."
"The student and I reviewed the material to prepare for her test the following day. We went over parabolas and identifying the vertex and axis of symmetry. In addition, we revisited completing the square to prepare her for possible questions. We broadened the scope with higher order polynomial functions, identifying their end behavior and zeros to derive the equation that describes a certain function."
"The student and I spent his session reviewing for his Geometry midterm exam. We covered several concepts, including similarity, congruence, and proofs. The goal of the session was to complete problems accurately and efficiently. I gave him several testing tips, as well as different methods in completing his problems, especially the proofs. Overall, he grasped the concepts, and should do well on future assessments and assignments."
"The student and I spent the time reviewing sections 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 for his quiz tomorrow. We made a figure to help organize the ideas of these sections, and he became much more comfortable with the material towards the end. By memorizing the theorems and connecting them to concrete examples, he's starting to better process the concepts. He did a great job today!"
"The student and I spent this session completing the problem of the week. It was a complicated problem where he had to find the shortest route for a traveler by using right triangles. He only needed minimal guidance with the calculations."
"The student and I spent tonight's session continuing our work on the practice upper level ISEE math practice test that we began last week. We reviewed topics that he had difficulty with as we went along. These included: fractional exponents, permutations, and box-and-whisker plots. He is getting more and more comfortable each week reading and understanding the types of questions on this exam. Early on, he was rarely able to answer these questions correctly on his own; tonight, I'd estimate he was able to correctly answer about half of the questions he faced. We ended our session early tonight so that he could study for 2 exams he has upcoming in school; we'll make up the time next Monday, if possible."
