Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We finished working on sequences and moved on to working on compound interest. We did word problems with continuously compounded interest as well. Additionally, we learned how to put long equations into the calculator and reviewed simplifying these equations."
"Today we went over the common concepts tested in the English portion of the ACT. The student seems to have a pretty good grasp of most of the concepts, and has notes to help her familiarize herself with the concepts she struggles with. She is going to practice on her own to make sure that she has a better understanding of the concepts, hopefully weaning herself off of the notes altogether. We did go over some strategies for the English portion. She already had an adequate score for this section, and I'm confident that she'll be able to improve!"
"The student and I began work tonight with the science section. He has had trouble with these, and they are difficult, but he has been able to get past the first phase of them, where he needs to read and analyze graphs. His focus now needs to be on the ones where he is required to read, analyze, and understand how different experiments and theories compare and contrast. We worked through a couple of these, and he has a couple more to do for homework. We then began on an English section. He is pretty good with this section. I am asking him to try and get done the last two science passages for homework, as well as attempt the math 46-60 that we have left. We can look at that first thing Sunday. As always, it was a pleasure working with this student."
"Today the student showed me her new spelling list, and we went over pronunciation and spelling. I gave her a practice test, and we discussed sounding out the words and getting the letters in the right place. (On a number of the words, she had the right letters but they were in the wrong place!) Then she showed me her assignment to memorize the Gettysburg Address, one sentence (or paragraph) every week or so. The student says she's not good at memorizing, so I suggested she take one sentence at a time, and write it on an index card. During the week she should read and reread it, until she knows it by heart. Her mom and I both think she should work ahead--working on the current assignment and also on the next one. Her attitude was great, as usual!"
"Today, we continued our review of Precalculus. We focused on trigonometric identities. We reviewed the Pythagorean and double angle identities and how to use those to simplify expressions. Then, we worked through standardized test questions to get used to multiple choice test formatting."
"We worked through a lot more analytical word problems looking for keywords to determine how to solve them and what operations to use. The student is still struggling a lot with simple math operations, but is getting a little better. I urged him to practice the multiplication tables so that he can get faster in solving the problems. He has a lot of examples to work through."
