We practiced conversions using dimensional analysis with molar masses, mole ratios, etc. This was the area she struggled with the most. I was shown the student's grades so far (about halfway through the semester), which showed mostly high scores on homework and participation.

We worked entirely on physics for this session. The student has started working on sound and completing problems that involve the relationship between velocity, frequency, and wavelength. Some of the problems just required solving for velocity of sound at a certain temperature, or solving for the frequency of a sound wave given the wavelength. He did really well with these problems. After the sound wave problems, we moved onto open and closed pipe harmonics. He needed a little help with these because he hadn't learned much about them yet in class. We found the wavelength of various harmonics given an open or closed pipe with a certain length.

We did more work today on forces and free body diagrams. We worked through more complicated static body problems and reviewed concepts like normal force and inclined planes. Next week, we will probably continue to move onto dynamic forces and friction, assuming that is what his class covers in the next few days.

Today the student and I reviewed her packet on transcription and translation, and cleared up some of her questions about the entire process of protein synthesis. In particular, we highlighted the role of mRNA and tRNA as well as the locations of each part of the protein synthesis process. The material is not easy but she seems to be studying hard and I think will be well-prepared for her test on Friday. We then moved on to edit her Macbeth essay, where I helped her correct some of her quotations and grammatical mistakes. I cautioned her to be careful with her tenses in her writing.

Today we covered intermolecular forces. We spent the first part of the session teaching the student about the key intermolecular forces. We then moved on to practice questions. We practiced determining which intermolecular forces are present for different molecules and ranking of the strengths of each intermolecular force. The student seemed to understand the concepts behind each force well enough, but she struggled a little bit with applications. After we ran through a few problems and established some guidelines for approaching problems of this type, she became a lot more confident. She should continue to work on problems of this type. I will supply her with one of my old lesson plans in this topic which should give her some extra practice problems.
