How can a Math tutor help you?

Math is not everyone's favorite subject. If your child is struggling in their math class, there should be action taken to help them get up to speed. If your child, in fact, does have a hard time grasping their math lessons and understanding their math homework, Varsity Tutors can help match them with a personal tutor to assist them in working out their math struggles. Your child will also need to have a solid grasp on math for the MCAS (Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System) exam. Tutors are a good option for students who need that extra push and guidance in their studies. Math tutors in Boston can help give your child the attention they need.

Boston, Massachusetts, math tutoring is a great choice if your child has difficulty keeping up with their math class. With a personal tutor, your student can learn in an environment where they are able to focus and enjoy the material. The tutor can teach the information in a fashion that correlates with your child's learning style, whether they are hands-on, visual, or any other type of learner. Their tutor can go beyond the classroom to help them study the material in a new way that can be effective, and sometimes even fun! For example, if your child doesn't understand how to read a bar graph and they are a hands-on learner, then a tutor could provide resources and activities catered to this style of learning to help them retain the information for later application. A traditional classroom cannot offer the opportunity for such individualized learning.

Boston, MA Math tutoring
The student has begun a unit on geometry. She had homework to complete drawing and identifying lines, line segments, points, rays, perpendicular lines, interested ting lines, and others. We discussed and differentiated between the different ones and began to create flash cards. I stressed the importance of using a straight edge in geometry and being very neat.

The student and I worked together on Vectors. She had a strong understanding of vectors, so we mostly worked on developing tools for magnitude. I also worked with the student to speed her up with a Trig table (a pi chart that she fills in on a timer, like multiplication tables). With this, I hope to improve her speed on tests. We also worked on how to avoid getting stuck on problems by self asking three questions: What do I know How to I write that in math terms What can I do with what I have to get the answer (aka What do I need, and what can I do to get there)

The student and I worked on logarithms for her upcoming test. We reviewed her homework, which allowed us to go back over the Log Laws and the rules for how to approach log equations. The student seems to have a good understanding of the material and had been able to complete most of her homework correctly on her own. We also spent some time discussing and practicing rules for graphing exponentials, since this was something she had been struggling with. This seemed to help and she had a better handle on it by the end of the session. Finally, since the student has been having some trouble finishing her math tests within the given time frame, we talked about some strategies for getting faster, especially practicing problems so she knows all the rules and when to apply them.

The student had some bonus make up problems from chapter 7 (logarithms). We worked through the whole worksheet and then started reviewing for his test on the beginning sections of chapter 8. We didn't do any practice problems from chapter 8, but reviewed concepts and I answered questions he had previously thought of.

This session we predominantly worked on a set of review quizzes given by the student's teacher. The first, the student had mostly completed, but we reviewed several physics problems dealing with position, speed, velocity, and acceleration. Additionally, we covered test taking strategies on how to find the solution among the multiple choice answers even if it does not come out mathematically. The first quiz also dealt with rudimentary vector calculus, which I am pleased to say the student was able to do mostly from memory. The remainder of our session consisted of a second quiz that covered advanced forms of exponential and logarithmic functions and their derivatives. The student was able to use most of the log laws easily, and the calculus elements of the problems came with practice. I am glad to report that Brandon is registered for the AP Calculus BC exam. If we continue at this rate, I fully expect him to be prepared to score well on both the AP exam and on his in-school examinations.
