How can a DAT tutor help you?

If you have set your sights on matriculating in dental school, you will need to succeed on the Dental Admission Test (DAT) in order to impress schools with your stellar scores. Pre-dental students often take course loads full of biology, chemistry, and math courses; upon learning that the DAT tests material from many of these subjects, they may assume that they won’t have to study excessively in order to be fully prepared. Succeeding in science and math classes, however, doesn’t necessarily mean that one is prepared to do well on this exam. There are numerous aspects of the DAT that make focused review necessary for success.

While much of the science content tested on the DAT is material covered in introductory biology, general chemistry, and organic chemistry, it may have been a while since anyone asked you detailed questions about this subject matter. When was the last time you had to do a stoichiometry problem, to name all of the organelles in a eukaryotic animal cell, or to analyze an organic chemistry mechanism? Can you describe lab procedures, techniques, and equipment accurately and in great detail? Laboratory skills also form part of the content tested on the Survey of the Natural Sciences section of this exam. In addition, the DAT includes a Quantitative Reasoning section that stresses algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and converting units, amongst other topics—more subjects that you may need to review before you can accurately demonstrate what you’ve learned. The DAT presents another sort of obstacle in that certain parts of the test may not correspond with material that you’ve ever formally studied or been tested on. The DAT’s Perceptual Ability section may be the best example of this sort of challenge; the section involves question types such as paper folding and cube counting. Preparing for this section requires focused review.

To prepare for the DAT efficiently, students need to identify which subjects and topics they most need to review, and focus their attention on these key areas. For example, you may be an expert at evolutionary biology, but need help reviewing how to match graphs of different trigonometric functions with their equations. Finding effective, targeted methods to review material can pose a challenge. Preparation books and group-based review courses often don’t fit the bill. They may not be able to help you identify the weak areas in your understanding, and the instruction they provide is “one-size-fits-all” and can’t be custom-tailored to address your specific strengths and weaknesses. If you want to review just the concepts that you need to work on with an expert who has succeeded on this exam before, Varsity Tutors’ personal DAT tutoring may be just the thing to bring structure and efficiency to your test prep.

Varsity Tutors’ one-on-one instruction is provided by experts who know all of the details of the DAT and have the teaching skills to clarify the most convoluted concepts that it tests. Your instructor can create customized lesson plans for your tutoring sessions that target just the concepts it would most benefit you to study. Because of the individualized nature of our DAT tutoring, you can have your instructor’s full attention and devote as much time to mastering a given topic as is needed before moving on to another one.
