Session Summaries by Computer Science Tutors

Boston, MA Computer Science tutoring
The student finished reviewing Grid World on his own. We returned to free response samples from previous years. He has had plenty of exposure to the types of problems, now to expect on the test. The answers he came up with were often full-credit answers, or answers that would receive minimal deductions. His pacing seems good as well. He still gets stuck occasionally in the logic of a problem. Oftentimes leaving such a problem and coming back is a good strategy. For our last session I will focus on similar test taking tips and, time permitting, we'll also go through a few more free responses.

Today the student and I covered the basics of how applets work as well as GUI programming. We discussed how Java applets are run in web browsers, and we looked at a few programs that use the paint function to draw images in a web browser. We also covered how to construct GUI's and discussed how event driven programming works. We created a simple program that used event driven programming techniques to change the color of a window when buttons were clicked. Afterwards we discussed layout types that are used to design GUI's and the benefits of using certain layout types over others.

At the beginning of the session, we explored the inside of an old desktop computer, identifying components and talking about how they work together to make the computer function. We then decided to focus on the Python language, as it is pre-installed on the Mac. Before our next session, the student will read chapters 1-3, and then we will go through the game example in chapter 4 together at our next session. I will also bring a challenging assignment to the next session to keep her interest and give her something fun to work on using her new Python skills.

We worked on enemies for the final level and scanning drawings of the actors and weapons and transferring them to the development computer. We probably need to obtain image editing software to refine the assets; I might bring in my drawing tablet next session to make it easier to create graphics. It would also be nice to figure out an easier (read: faster) way to transfer files between the various computers we're using.
