Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Began reviewing for the end of course test. We started going over synthetic division and definitions of numbers. The student only had problems finding an initial zero to start the division, but otherwise had no issues. We reviewed the groups of numbers (rational, irrational, real, imaginary, complex) and made sure he can distinguish between the groups and went over some tricky examples to test him. The student was able to answer these questions with little issue."
"The student missed the lesson on conics, so we went over it. I gave her strategies on how to identify the conic when given an equation. Once she learned how to identify the conic, we worked on putting the equation into standard form. We reviewed how to complete the square. We then worked through how to find the focus, vertices, asymptotes, and centers of the conic. She was able to do these problems when given the equations, so she'll need to work on having them memorized for her test."
"Today we worked on sequences and sums for a quiz that the student has coming up. We talked about what sums and sequences are and how they are used, and then dove into a homework sheet she had. We went through every type of problem that could appear on this quiz, stopping any time there was a concern. We then went back and practiced some of the harder problems (variable factorials, recursive sequences, etc.). She has enough extra practice to prepare for the quiz."
"We went over the law of sines, law of cosines, Heron's formula and triangle area formulas using sine."
"In today's session we covered the handouts that the student had provided. The subject was on circles in polar coordinates and limacons (snail) graphs. We covered graphing snails and circles by looking at the equation and more precisely graphing snails through plugging in various angles to find its corresponding magnitude. I also reviewed the material in our past sessions (lemniscates, roses petals). We reviewed graphing rose petals and lemniscates. In today's session he did a great job with circles and snails, had some great questions on what symmetry represents in a graph and we reviewed his questions. I feel like he is confident with symmetry."
"Today we worked on combinations/ permutations, and the binomial theorem. The student was pretty good at using these formulas, but sometimes forgot the binomial coefficient in front of a term. He continues to show a strong aptitude in math. I try to point out any little mistakes he makes so he can try to catch them when he is working on his own."
