Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I reviewed the results of his latest practice exam. We spent today sifting through the test prep book's problem solving for geometry questions. We will finish those questions next session. I assigned him 3 custom sets of sentence correction questions for him to practice before our next session. Once we complete geometry, we will turn to algebra."
"The student completed her practice Verbal section and only missed 10 Q - 1 RC, 5 CR, 4 SC. We reviewed missed questions and discussed strategies. She did a practice math section today and scored a 48-50 (89/90 percentile). She's taking a full practice test for homework."
"The student did very nice work today examining and clarifying the rules from the subject-verb agreement drills. We also went thru the Extinctions reading, which was certainly tough, but hopefully, we exposed some of her weaknesses and discussed some ways to organize all the information presented in these passages. Lastly, we introduced Critical reasoning (CR). I'll give her plenty of these for homework so she can practice."
"The student downloaded preparatory software and took his first practice exam this past week, scoring in the mid 500's, which is in line with where he needs to be overall for the program he's applying to. Accordingly, our time will focus on making sure he feels confident and comfortable, brushing the dust off some old concepts, but not striving for huge gains. We worked through the math section of the test today together, question by question, discussing several math topics including combinatorics, geometry of circles and triangles, and proportions. We also discussed the answer-choice patterns for the Data Sufficiency and how to orient yourself to the material as it's presented. He's going to be working through his lesson book this coming week and keeping a jot-list of topics to discuss next Tuesday."
"The student had gathered a few sets of questions that covered topics he was having troubles with. We went over these sets and tried to figure out strategies and rules that govern each type. First, we discussed percents and fractions. We talked about looking at the problem in extremes. We also practiced mathematical modeling to determine whether or not we had enough information to solve. We then worked on number properties. One helpful tip is to think about numbers in terms of divisors. We tried to figure out other properties of numbers that would be useful. Overall, he is understanding very well and is making progress. He now needs to apply what he's learned in a timely manner so he can score well on the test. We'll meet again next week."
"The student had taken another GMAC practice test. We discussed a study plan for the next 3.5 months."
