Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on finding the area of different polygons. The student had trouble when it came to dealing with radicals. We went over some of the properties of radicals so he felt more comfortable working with them. We also discussed the difference between a radius and an apothem. He still has trouble finding the apothem, so we will continue to work on it next session."
"The student made an 89 on her last quiz. We continued on to chapter 10 in which we covered circles and their parts - tangents, secants, diameters, and radii. I taught her how to solve circle problems dealing with tangents and the Pythagorean theorem. These concepts tested her ability to integrate multiple topics into one solution. She practiced these problems on her own as well, and was able to do them without my help. I then reviewed algebra with her to reinforce skills I believe she will need to know to move on with geometry."
"The student and I worked very well together. I was able to show her some simple processes to make sense of the questions. We will work through sections as directed by her instructor going forward. I feel like she made good progress."
"For this session, the student and I prepared for his upcoming test on volume, which will take place on Wednesday. The student had already completed his review assignment, so we went through his homework and notes packet from the entire chapter. First, we started off by defining the different three dimensional shapes, naming them, and labeling their parts. This was the first section of the chapter, so the material was not very fresh in the student's mind. His definitions were a bit shaky at first, so we clarified those, but overall, he was very confident after 5-10 minutes of review. We then went through his homework packet and re-worked every problem he got wrong that we did not do our previous session. There was not one particular area where the student seemed to struggle with the content."
"We went over 10.6 on circles (arc measures/lengths and circumference) and the student was fairly comfortable with the material. We were also able to review her math homework, which she didn't have difficulty completing. She wanted to go over 10.1/10.2 because she has a quiz on Thursday and she expressed concern over harder problems so I went over them with her. I reviewed the trig identities and the 30-60-90 triangle. I assigned her similar problems and offered to check them for her prior to her quiz on Thursday."
"We went over the student's most recent quiz, figuring out where he went wrong with various problems. Most of them were caused by confusing formulas, so we have spent more time in class trying to solve problems without the use of formulas (breaking them down to their smallest components) and that seems to make a difference in his understanding. His understanding of the material was greatly improved over the session, and I think he will do just fine on his test tomorrow."
