Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over the sliding window protocols in detail. We discussed GoBackN, Stop & Wait, with several examples and scenarios. He was very motivated and eager to learn all the concepts. He is catching up with the various flow control mechanisms on Data Link layer. We will resume our discussion in the next session."
"The student is ready for a final review session. Today, she reviewed graphs, tables, equations and file management and learned how to draw shapes freeform in her slides. She did a fantastic job by every measure and I look forward to our final meeting this coming Monday!"
"We discussed the student's hw 12 to keep creating the class QuickPicks from last session. Classes are a new subject area for her, but I think she's starting to grasp them well. We also discussed her next assignment and will be meeting again on Thursday."
"We spent this session reviewing the student's computer science class assignments. In addition to walking her through the problems, we reviewed new concepts like lists, equality and inequality operators, Boolean expressions, and index operators and then put them into practice with examples I asked her to come up with and run in the interactive Python shell. I am glad to see she that she is demonstrating increased comfort coming up with the required code and then running it in the interpreter. She will continue working through her homework assignments throughout the semester, and I hope to in addition continue challenging her to come up with her own code proving that she has a deep mastery over the concepts beyond just rote memorization."
"We reviewed the student's assignment, which was to create the game "21" using the data structures and logic that he has learned in class (dictionaries, lists, loops, conditionals, functions). We had a good session today. The student was more communicative than previously, especially when the concepts began clicking for him. This helped me understand how he behaves when he actually understands what I'm trying to explain, which is good to know. It seemed like he had a good handle on what was going on. I think he just needs more practice with the logical, step-by-step thinking that programming requires."
"Today, the student and I continued working on the practice final we began yesterday. We started with a brief recap of the problems and concepts we had tackled previously (algorithmic thinking, and algorithm building) and then applied them to the next few questions. I let him take the reins today, asking him to guide me through the algorithms instead of the other way around. He demonstrated an excellent ability to think through and examine the code. I am very pleased with his progress and have growing confidence in his ability to complete the final. I left him with a call to review the questions we went over as well as generate any other questions or additional material he might want to work on. We meet again tomorrow at the same time."
