Session Summaries by Physical Chemistry Tutors

Boca Raton, FL Physical Chemistry tutoring
In this session we covered numerical methods for the student's test on Thursday. She did very well, but just needs to consolidate all of the information and carefully setup the problems and work the numbers in her calculator correctly.

The student and I worked through eight problems in preparation for a physics test on angular momentum and its conservation. The problems were from his own review worksheet, and they ramped up from easy/warm-up to more involved. He had a firm grasp of the material, and is very careful about working through the problems methodically and knowing what physical laws and/or constraints to apply. He also has gained some good experience with working with moment of inertias and how they change and depend on the choice of axis of rotation. Good work!

We jumped right into light and optics, focusing on the properties of light, and how light changes in materials. We then used that as a springboard to discuss geometric optics. Next week we will go over last year's AP Physics exam. Having covered the material needed for the first question, he should be able to do all the problems. We will then finish our discussion of geometric optics by covering lenses.

We covered ionic and covalent bonds, electronegativity, formal charges, resonance structures, selecting the best one, bond order, electron and molecular geometry, angle sizes in molecular geometry, Valence Bond Theory, and Molecular Orbital Theory. The student understood everything for the most part and we covered a lot of ground in a short period of time.

Today we covered some topics in optics. We started with Snell's law, covering how to solve for an angle of refraction, as well as how to find a critical angle. After that we talked about the optics of mirrors and lenses. I explained how to draw a ray diagram and what information can be obtained from them. We finished with how Snell's law can be used to determine if a lens will make light converge or diverge. The student was engaged, and by the end of the session she seemed to have a good grasp on what we covered.
