Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"With the first student, we discussed solving matrices and probability. With probability we worked on histograms, frequency diagrams, and cumulative frequency diagrams. We also discussed the differences between mode, median, mean, and range. The second student performed poorly on his rational expressions test and quiz, so we worked on the corrections to prepare him for this. He had most trouble with adding and subtracting rational expressions because he kept forgetting to keep the denominator. He now understands this concept. We also went over solving complex rational expressions and how to simplify them along with how to find excluded values."
"The student had questions on a couple problems from a homework packet, covering a somewhat broad range of topics. Outside of the packet, we also went over some concepts in probability, and we looked deeply at solving and graphing linear equations. She did a great job focusing and working during the session."
"Our main area of focus during this tutoring lesson was Algebra. Specifically, we reviewed practice worksheet 10-2: Simplifying Radicals. This two-page, Algebra worksheet contained 38 questions. We also looked at a couple of key concepts involved in simplifying radicals: 1) the product property of radicals (The square root of a product equals the product of the square roots of the factors.); 2) the quotient property of radicals (The square root of a quotient equals the quotient of the square roots of the numerator and denominator.). He is a conscientious student and our tutoring sessions are always very productive."
"We went over factoring polynomials, difference of squares, and factoring trinomials. We then briefly touched on how to use the calculator to find the solutions as well as the vertex of a quadratic equation."
"The student has been getting review material to prepare for her final exam. She should work on this little by little everyday. Today we worked on two different sections that she specified she had trouble with. She did very well and understood them by the end of the session."
"The student and I worked on a review for his test coming up at the end of the week. The review consisted of mean, median, mode, range, first quartile, third quartile, and scatter plots. He seems to be excelling in this topic."
"Today the student and I first covered multiplication and division of exponents. Then we worked on axiom and properties of algebra. Afterwards, we reviewed some basic factoring. He is doing great and has no struggles."
"The student has a mid-chapter test coming up and was given a review assignment to work on. The assignment covered different forms or lines as well as parallel and perpendicular lines. She just learned about perpendicular lines, so we made a note card for her to remind her how they are found. We spent some time working on memorization of the different forms."
"Today, the student wanted to go over questions concerning matrix algebra. This involved finding the inverse of 2x2, 3x3, and 4x4 matrices both manually and with a calculator, as well as solving systems of equations by turning these systems into matrices and solving the matrix system. She did very well at solving these problems, and only required minimal help when solving matrix systems manually. She picked up on solving matrix systems very quickly."
"We went over the student's recently assigned classwork. The classwork was all based on systems of linear equations. We went over substitution and elimination, as well as various word problems involving pricing. We also went over linear inequalities. He is definitely showing improvement."
"In this session with the student, we focused on Algebra section 11.1. We went through his class notes as well as the instructional problems in the book. I showed him some tricks on how to simplify polynomials and he seemed to feel much better about how to approach these types of problems. We went through all of his homework and he did really well. I also noticed that he had a really good attitude during this session and was willing to ask me questions when he came across something that he was having difficulty with. Overall this was a really good session with the student."
"Before we worked on Algebra today, we reviewed her geography homework. The Algebra homework consisted of practice for her upcoming test and a review. She did really well on both; she was very independent. I saw all her grades again, and she has made progress."
