"We read poetry by Cummings and Borges, completed vocabulary exercises, discussed content, format, research methods, and ongoing daily assignments for the research paper the student is writing."
"For this essay, we worked on organization and word choice, moving away from personal pronouns to more active-voice writing. We also looked at adding details to be more specific."
"The student had done his reading assigned for today. We have talked about what a tight schedule we have for him to get his reading done for class, so he really needs to try to stay on schedule. We discussed a lot of what happened in the first 1/3 of the book and the characters as well as the French war in Vietnam. Next he and I studied phrases and clauses. We talked about how they can be used, and the difference between independent and dependent clauses. I then had the student write 2 pages on why the Inspector suspects Fowler in the murder of Pyle based on his reading of the first 60 pages of the novel. He did an excellent job on the writing. He had a couple sentences that ended with a preposition, and we talked about how we really don't prefer that in formal writing, and I asked him to think about how it would need to be changed. He also had an unclear modifying phrase that I explained to him would need to be adjusted."
"We worked on clarifying the abstract and introduction of the student's proposal. We discussed the types of statistical analyses that will be used to test each of her two hypotheses. Sentence structure and other details of her paper were addressed. She seemed more confident in her work at the end of our session - awesome! We will continue to go through each section of her proposal together in future sessions. In the meantime, she can take a look at the changes and comments I made in a document I emailed to her."
"We worked on comma usage. We reviewed LLV4 and she retook it for a better grade. She has LLR4 for homework and I have sent her LLV5 and LLR5 as well. We also read Chapter 2 on "A Little Princess." We will begin Chapter 3 next week. She will do a book report once we are finished."
"We worked on expository writing through a "memorial" exercise. After reading about the death of the last surviving service dog of 9/11, the student crafted a memorial, wrote a plaque, and drafted a letter to the mayor explaining why a memorial should be constructed."
