Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We read short stories including "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson and "The Ransom of Red Chief." I left the student with some reading comprehension homework as well as the book "Holes" to read."
"The student and I worked on reading today using two leveled reading books for 1st grade. We also worked on an activity using contraction flashcards and continued our work reviewing sound blends."
"The student had a great week at school. She scored a 100% on her vocab quiz and felt that her name presentation went well. Her father mentioned that in a conversation with her instructors, they all feel that she is on track to have a much better semester. At today's session, we began with a review of the material she covered in class this past week. She stated that she felt good with everything and that there were no topics that she needed my help with. We then moved on to reading comprehension exercises. I had her read some short passages and then summarize the passages to me verbally. I then asked her some comprehension questions about what she read. We discussed reading strategies and I suggested to read a few pages and then take a break to review what she read. I also suggested that she do her reading downstairs (as opposed to her room upstairs) where she will have fewer distractions. We also worked on some basic grammar skills (linking verbs, irregular/regular verbs, pronoun/antecedent agreement), of which she did very well. She was able to relate a lot of what we talked about to her studies in Latin. The last topic we covered was writing, specifically the purpose of a thesis statement, again something that she is quite knowledgeable about. She is anticipating a great week at school with no major projects or assessments. Today was a good session!"
"We worked on conversation skills, reinforcing tenses and identifying specific subjects rather than vague references to "people." The student also practiced summarizing skills and compare/contrast skills. She is gaining confidence and self-corrects many of her errors."
"We worked on expanding the student's vocabulary. She practiced writing some descriptive sentences. She also worked on putting the words in the correct order for sentences. We also did some review of simple past tense and past tense participles. We worked on reading comprehension as she read another portion in her chapter book. Her conversation skills have really improved. It is so good to see her apply what she has been learning."
"We worked on finding scholarly articles through the library. We worked on clearly outlining her first paper. The student's homework was to read through the articles found and take notes. We also talked a little about organizing notes and we will start in on finishing the paper tomorrow."
