Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In today's session, we started with a discussion about practicing the Essay section and discussing the reading assignment from last session. I provided the student with a sample prompt to complete for next session for review. The bulk of today's session focused on the assessment Math section. We did a number of example problems that focused on miscellaneous problems including, logic problems, sequences and series, number properties and averages. We then reviewed a number of content areas focusing on word problems. We focused on interpreting percents, ratios, and proportions. For our next session, I provided the student with the equivalent of a full length Math section (3 practice sections) to complete, as well as the timed essay. The student was engaged and actively participated in today's session. Our next meeting will be on Sept 17th at 6:30pm."
"The student did brilliantly on critical reading. He still needs to work more to improve his writing - he tends to over-think questions, but he did better as the session went on. With some more practice I'm sure he'll ace it."
"We worked on passage-based reading questions for most of the session. The student improved in his approach and efficiency, scanning questions before reading a passage and answering the general questions before the specific ones. We finished the session by working on sentence error problems (writing section). We also reviewed the text format as a whole in preparation for the student taking a full practice test before our next session."
"We covered both Sentence Completion and Passage-Based Reading with the student, doing problems with the online platform to gauge her proficiency in those areas, and discovering that the student is quite strong in both her vocabulary and reading comprehension. I then asked her to do at least 20 minutes of math problems a day until I see her next Friday, in order to gauge her proficiency in the major math topics on the assessment exam."
"The student and I had an awesome first session! She was very engaged and willing to try new strategies. We worked primarily on the Critical Reading section, going over active reading and answer techniques. The student took to these skills immediately and was very happy with the results. We finished up with a run-through of an English section so I could gauge the students grammar level. Overall, I loved working with the student and can't wait to see her again next Saturday."
"This week, the student and I covered all of the problems that she completed for homework from the math practice workbook. We focused on systems of equations and systems of inequalities. I also gave her some practice problems of my own to work through. For the second half of the session, the student completed a practice assessment mathematics section (timed). Finally, I ended the session by assigning her problems to complete from the math workbook to review next time."
"This session, we covered math problems involving sets (mean, median, mode, sums, etc..) and slopes (negative vs. positive and increasing vs. decreasing). I gave him a number of different problems to work on during the session that required different types of application of these ideas. I also began to cover sentence completion questions (reading) and the importance of strategy in addition to vocabulary knowledge for these questions. For next time, I asked the student to do additional practice on the math problems we covered and to review previous questions."
"Today we covered more assessment math problems from the practice test the student took during the first session. I assigned a practice Critical Reading test for the student to take by the next session. No concerns from this session."
"I was pleased to see that the student 's CR score improved on the practice test he did for homework, especially with regard to sentence completions. The student has strong math skills. We spent a great deal of time reviewing old vocab words and learning new ones, which the student will add in to his flashcard set for this week's homework."
"I did an hour and a half with each student. For both, we finished assessment writing section by reading through sample essays. Then we began the assessment math section in which we covered algebra concepts, linear equations, and other concepts. We got up to Functions, which we agreed we would start next session. I left them both with practice examples covering the math concepts we had discussed. We will review them next session and continue going over functions, followed by geometry. After we finish going through concepts, we will continue covering practice questions."
"Today's session focused on the writing portion of the assessment. We went over strategies for writing the essay and MC questions on the writing section. The student was given homework of practice exams due by the next session."
"Today the student and I worked on the writing section of the SAT. We focused on the three different types of problems found. We worked on how to identify a clean and concise sentence according to the SAT standards, and he seemed to get the use of subject-predicate-object construction in avoiding passive voice. One area for him to work on is to remember how subject-verb agreement choices can be tricky because the questions sometimes distance the verb from the noun. For homework he will complete more sample questions from the set and we will go over his essay."
