Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student did wonderfully this session! He is making great progress in his reading and his attitude towards tutoring sessions. He read the second chapter of his Dragons Masters book out loud, using his pencil to trace the words on the page as he read to increase fluency. Additionally, we discussed the plot and the characters, pausing several times throughout the reading to check for comprehension. Finally, with some minor assistance, he wrote five complete sentences successfully summarizing the main idea of the chapter."
"I worked with Student A on taking notes from an article for his persuasive essay (paragraph). He wants to write a letter about the need for organic foods in schools, so I found an article to support his thesis. For homework, I outlined a sheet for him to put all of his thoughts we've brainstormed onto one page, and then we'll shape it into his essay. We ended by reading one of his favorite books. Student B and I worked on his packet of math and ELA. He worked on math equivalents and figured out a rather challenging word problem which is the beginnings of algebra. He had to explain how he arrived at his answer, which is advanced."
"The student made up a song, using full phrases and sentences, about the characters from the book we read. After this activity, he practiced writing letters and identifying the letter F on an activity sheet. The student did very well identifying and writing the letter. Action steps include continuing to practice tracing and identifying letters."
"The student and I reviewed last week's flashcards, his module 1 and 2, and his basic greetings. We then made flashcards for food, beverages, and animals, and reviewed those. We also went over the way beverages come--a cup of tea, a glass of juice, a bottle of Coke. He took a quiz on the terms, and did very well!"
"We warmed up with a short fluency passage that included basic comprehension questions. We reviewed short i and e. We will continue to cover short vowel sounds while also working on other spelling patterns and rules. Today we also covered ng and nk. The student was very comfortable reading words using these patterns and also spelling words with this pattern. Next we used the Cavemice series for comprehension practice, stopping along the way to monitor comprehension and to make sure that he understood the author's use of figurative language, and using word attack strategies to decode unfamiliar words in the text."
"The student worked on his essay off line a little bit in between sessions (woohoo!). In today's session, we fully developed his first body paragraph and started his second body paragraph. I've asked him to finish up the second paragraph in between today's session and tomorrow's. He will be turning the essay in tomorrow after our session."
