Biology Tutoring review by Matthew in Cedar Park, TX
The student has a chemistry test tomorrow, which is why we agreed to meet tonight instead of Wednesday this week. The test is over atomic orbitals and waves (frequency, wavelength, energy). We reviewed the equations, went over old quizzes, and worked through her study guide. I think the exercise of going through the periodic table one element at a time really helped her understand orbitals and electron configurations. I think she'll do really well on this test!

During today's session, the student and I reviewed for a Chemistry exam. We reviewed matter, mass, pure substances, elements, compounds, mixtures, etc. This also included phase transitions, physical and chemical changes, as well as physical processes such as distillation and filtration. The Chemistry exam effectively covered the first chapter vocabulary and terminology of a general chemistry course. He needed some clarification on terms and after our session he seemed quite comfortable and ready for the exam. The student is doing quite well in school.

Biology Tutoring review by Pooja in Cedar Park, TX
Ideal gas law vs. combined gas law. She seems to understand the main concept of how to solve for problems. Needs the equation sheet to solve for problems, but with more practice without the equation sheet she can master the equations easily. Also, work on problems in a slower pace because when working too fast, there are small errors which lead to incorrect solutions.

Biology Tutoring review by Alysa in Cedar Park, TX
The student studied for her chemistry quiz on solubility and calculating percent by mass. We looked through examples in the book and then attempted the practice problems given for homework. She did well and was able to use the formula to solve for the percent by mass. We also looked over her algebra review packet. My advice for the student is to look through all of her homework and classwork problems first - before attempting the review packet. The goal should be to use the review packet as an assessment of what you know/what you need to focus on more. It may also be helpful for the student to write (in words) the steps you take the solve the problems. This would give her more of a systematic way to approach these problems.

Reviewed compounds: naming (both ionic and covalent), the necessity of including Roman numerals for transition metals, how to include subscripts, the polyatomic anions, etc. The student has a strong understanding of all the concepts, but sometimes rushes and misses Roman numerals. Nonetheless, I'm pleased with her progress and that she got an A on her last chemistry quiz. Briefly covered substitution and elimination when solving systems of equations. She easily completed her Algebra II homework.
