Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I did some reading drills by using lists of sight words and common phrases. We then alternated reading pages from a novel that is written at a 7th grade level. We ended by reading poems. We recorded the student reading and assessed his fluency."
"We read and discussed the book "Charly Did It," which is a fictional text on the student's level. The skill focus is figurative language. Her mom shared her most recent practice reading test with me and she is at 2.4-3.4. I have noticed she struggles a bit with abstract thinking in fictional texts, and it is easier for her to comprehend informational texts because they are more concrete. We will continue to work in fictional texts, and she chose "Aunt Maddy Visits" for next week."
"The student and I did reading comprehension exercises for his current book about dinosaurs. He had finished reading it, and he did well on both the end-chapter questions and the book-summary items. He also wrote a short paragraph in response to a prompt about a picture from the book. We then proofed it; he was receptive regarding the needed corrections. We are continuing to spend time on working toward a better understanding and application of phonics. As always, the student was very focused overall and pleasant. He's trying to slow down some and beginning to recognize the value in doing so. We also did a spelling quiz on the words he had in the units before the holidays."
"The student and I worked on vocabulary, grammar, and editing today. We used an SAT prep book to come up with a set of vocabulary words. We reviewed their definitions and gave examples of their use. She is going to write sentences with these words for extra practice. Then, we went over simple, complex, and compound sentences and we talked about editing for sentence variation. We ended the session by practicing editing sentences for length, clarity, and liveliness (or how engaging it is for the reader). She did great work today, as usual!"
"The student completed an essay writing assignment for Romeo and Juliet. It was a great win for the session. The student is quite a good writer and has a very creative mind. As she she writes more, she will slowly build a writer's confidence and really do well."
"The student completed her first full draft for the Hero's Journey. Lastly, she will need to go through the entire story to edit and revise as needed for her final publication. Then she needs to complete all of the reading assignments and reading comprehension questions to complete all required assignments for English."
