Berwyn, IL Microbiology tutoring
The student and I covered potential energy and kinetic energy, including the work potential energy theorem, which, using the law of conservation of energy, can allow you to determine the velocity of any object at the top and bottom of a hill, or given the energy or velocity change, you can determine the height of a hill. We did several problems involving simple items lifted, carried, and dropped. Then I emailed him a document from a theme park about the physics of the theme park, specifically the roller coasters. I told him, if he wished, he could use the book to practice extra questions. Though some of the realizations seemed new to him (that no matter how you get to the bottom of a hill, for instance, you will still be traveling the exact same velocity in each case). Other things, he was already comfortable with (no work being done while holding a heavy object while walking since no force is opposing the motion). We will meet again on Saturday.

The student and I covered quantum mechanic classification of electron orbitals as well as energy changes that occur when electrons change levels based on the Bohr model for her test tomorrow. By the end, she was far more comfortable with the material and knew each quantum number meaning, what was theoretically possible, and how to calculate wavelengths of released photons.

The student and I covered reflection on geometric surfaces. The student understands most if not all the concepts. His only fault is knowing how to set up the equations with some particular configuration. He is very smart and clever to understand and can solve most problems on his own.

The student and I covered resonance and exceptions to the octet rule. More generally, we emphasized problem-solving strategies. On a test, some exceptions to the octet rule, for example, might seem new. It's consequently important at this point to develop a method for dealing with examples that are unfamiliar. With these particular sorts of problems, the strategy is similar as that for balancing chemical equations.

The student and I covered rotation and conservation of energy. For one of the problems, there were a couple of ways to solve it, so I suggested the student use an easier method instead of the lengthier version, and she really liked it.

The student and I covered section 5.4, which is the basics of genetics, including Mendelian genetics, Punnett squares, etc. He had a worksheet from class that he wanted to work on, so we worked through that together. After clarifying the basics of phenotypes vs. genotypes, recessive vs. dominant, and genes vs. alleles, he understood everything well. We also finished the review at the end of the section.
