Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We built the ascending and descending sorting methods and the method to clear cells. Before we meet next, the student is going to try to call the clear methods. We are getting close to finishing the program!"
"We went over a free response question from a previous AP Java exam, discussed some concepts the students had questions with, and looked over their most recent lab assignments. They seem to have a good grasp on the fundamental concepts but have requested extra help with AP practice problems."
"We covered the idea of using array indices as a separate attribute of objects. In this case, the indices of a two dimensional array represented a student object's seating position in a class. We also reviewed the concept of a two dimensional array: an array of arrays, and how to traverse a two dimensional array. The student at first struggled with the former concept mentioned above, but once we got past that she picked up the latter concept pretty quickly. She seemed engaged and it seems she feels much more comfortable with the concepts now than she did previously. Toward the end we also covered the difference between the = operator and the == operator. I also mentioned the difference between value and reference in the context of Java, but we will continue to talk about that concept in a later session."
"This session, we exported mailing lists from Word documents to Excel and then into Mailchimp. We set up a Mailchimp account and mailing lists. I left the student with some website tutorials on Dropbox, as we will be working on Dropbox in our next session."
"We went over computer language. I have the student do the steps with his own hands so he gets familiar with looking for the right items. We printed his calendar in different formats. We worked through over a week's worth of review."
"The session was mostly spent in review. We went over two of the functions and formulas from last session and did more with formatting graphs. The student's enthusiasm seems to be dwindling as we run out of new things to learn. She seems to be grasping the concepts we've covered so far. She is still struggling with hyperlinks and some functions in Excel, but she is getting there. She still has the data sheet from last time to review Excel functions. She also will be talking to her supervisor to get some further instructions."
