Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student asked to focus on optimization problems with derivatives. I started by giving a brief overview of the general process of finding local and absolute maximum and minimum. We went over some of his homework problems which actually dealt with writing an equation in terms of a variable which must be developed from a different equation. After two of these we worked on a limit problem, and I described the general strategies which can be used to help solve an indeterminant limit. After this, we worked on a few problems with minimum and maximum. Then we looked at a problem with graphs of the derivative given and used the graphs to determine features of the original function (increase, decreasing, concave up or down, etc.)"
"During our session, the student and I worked through problems from a review packet for his Calculus class. The problems covered a variety of topics, including particle velocity and acceleration, implicit differentiation, simplifying definite integrals, applying the fundamental theorem of calculus, finding the average value of a function over a defined interval, and applying the product rule to find the derivative of a function. He understood each of these concepts very well, and answered some advanced questions about intermediate steps correctly, demonstrating his knowledge of the material. I taught him the appropriate formula for determining the average value of a function, and once he understood it he had no issues applying the formula to other average value problems."
"Student was preparing for his third exam. He brought a copy of an exam review that he wanted to go over in order to prepare. I helped him review finding derivatives using the chain rule, product rule, and quotient rule, using the first and second derivatives to find local extrema, using the first and second derivatives to sketch a function, and trigonometric derivatives."
"Tonight we went over the student's previous calculus test, which covered integration. We went over the mistakes he made that he could not figure out. We figured out what he had done wrong, and he understood how to do those problems correctly afterward. We also went over a practice final that was given to him by his professor, and went over some problems that were in the areas that he was least comfortable with. We went through a few problems, and he understood how to do those problems as well once we refreshed his memory."
"We worked on identifying the graph of the derivative of a function given the graph of the function, slope derivative function, and the rules of differentiation (constants, power rule, continuity, discontinuity, and differentiation)."
"The student continued to work with her online calculus class. She is making great progress and is on point with her other classmates. She worked on applications to derivatives, differentials, and related rates. She has completed her class up to the midterm (completing all multiple choice quizzes and tests and free-response tests). She works very hard on the online class during and outside tutoring sessions."
