Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The session overall went well. We covered quadratic functions where we factored by completing the square and also covered factoring by the sum. These skills were all old skills, and his new material will be taught this upcoming week. Once he has the new material, we can review it with him and practice."
"The student did very well today. We discussed verb tenses and syntax. We are using a grammar text book for ELL users, and it is very helpful for understanding the differences in verb tenses. She is also doing very well on her reading passages. Her reading has very much improved, and she earned a B today on her practice tests. I predict that it will be no time before she earns all A's. Great job today! :)"
"Today we covered Le Passe Compose: this is a compound tense used to describe actions that happened in the past and are over. I taught the student to use the verb etre or the verb avoir as auxiliaries to conjugate a verb and the past participle of the main verb. The past participle endings are "e" accent aigu for ER verbs, "i" for IR verbs and "u" for RE verbs. I reminded her to beware of irregular past participles such as "mort", "pu", "du." The past participle agrees in number and gender when it is conjugated with the verb etre but it NEVER agrees with the verb avoir UNLESS the direct object is placed before the verb. L'imparfait or imperfect is used to describe actions that happened in past and went on for a while or were repeated. Tres bien!"
"During the session with the student we worked on a review of her homework assignment. Once we completed reviewing all of her assignments on Rule of Law, the Constitution, rights of the minority, etc. we started on her reading passages. She had to complete a new reading assessment. For the sake of time, I read the passage out loud for her and she answered the questions. It showed her at a 7.3 reading level, which is on target. We had a very good session. She will need to continue to work on her vocabulary words so that she can do even better."
"The student and I went over general strategies for the reading section of the test. Right now, he performs better in certain passage categories than others, so I focused on general test skills that apply to all passage types. My tips are aimed at increasing his speed and making sure he avoids trick answers, which are there to trip him up. He needs to make sure that every single word in the answers he picks is appropriate for the question being asked. For next time, I assigned the essay and the grammar section practice."
"We went over the student's math hw (one word problem) and checked his language hw (including compound sentences, complete sentences, and parts of speech). We also covered compound sentences, fragments/run-ons, parts of speech, pronouns (object and subject), adjectives, pronouns, and adverbs."
