Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had a good session. There was just one last problem to do, so we worked through the two methods of creating Q-Q plots. I showed him different useful functions and he was picking up some of the details of creating plots pretty well."
"In statistics we covered a lot of problems that remind you to refute 'The Rule of Averages.' We also worked on finding the number of combinations for an event, both ordered and unordered. For PreCalc, the focus was on trig and the trig functions' relationship to the unit circle."
"The topics today covered were chi-square two-way tests and measures of association. The student's assignment included calculating test statistics and correlation by hand and then doing similar problems using the STATA software. She understood the statistical concepts, and her STATA work was correct."
"We covered a number of areas in descriptive statistics. We started with how to display data with bar graphs, histograms, and frequency polygons. We also looked at table displays, including calculating proportions and percentages and totaling cumulative frequencies and percentiles. We finished by looking at symmetry and positive and negative skew."
"The student is taking Intro to Statistics as a senior in college. We covered the beginning stages and concepts of hypothesis testing today, including z-tests and one-sample t-tests. We also did review on standard error, standard error of the mean, variance, and the central limit theorem."
"The student needed help with starting to formulate her final research paper. This is a research methods class for her master's degree, so she needed specific help trying to organize the paper and also to run the statistical experiment that she plans to do. We went through and considered different types of experiment models, and we settled on breaking the participants into ability levels and gender as our independent variables. She is looking at how these two independent variables associate with the frequency of asking directions to a location. She had her proposal with her, so we based her study off of the proposal she had written and expanded from it."
