Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Yesterday I worked with the student on reading comprehension. He allowed me to read with him and we answered the prep questions together. I prepped him on how to comprehend his reading and looking for the answer from the text instead of guessing. He and I worked really well. He was prepared with all materials. Great session!"
"We did the usual things today--reading (Mr. Klutz in Nuts); word journal and writing; Singapore math (graphs); and mad minutes (addition, subtraction). We also reviewed basic punctuation (commas, periods, question marks, and exclamation points)."
"The student did really well with his homework today. We worked on traditional addition strategies (adding the ones column and then the tens column). He did not struggle with this at all - his math facts are getting better and the concepts are making more sense. We then worked on spelling and reading, and when asked to write sentences, he did a fantastic job coming up with creative answers. He has been a joy to work with!"
"The student and I worked on some math homework involving right triangles, acute triangles, tangents and circles, and overall she did pretty well, though she had a bit of a hard time with how to use knowledge of acute triangles at first. We spent most of the session focusing on Chemistry, going over a test she had recently taken, and working on the corrections regarding the use of PV=nRT, and a few other little details regarding gasses. Afterwards, we spent some time talking about organization and strategy, and she seemed eager to start trying to write down assignments in her planner; additionally we'll be creating an official study guide document for her to reference before tests."
"We reviewed the student's last chemistry test. He did well on many of the multiple choice questions and understood the acid-base reactions/equations for the most part. The areas he seemed to have the most trouble with were the concepts relevant to word problems and understanding how molecules interact in acid-base solutions. He struggled with the concept of conjugate acids and bases, so we reviewed the idea, and I tried to help him visualize what happens when an acid or base dissociates. We worked on as many word problems as possible. He had the most trouble towards the end with calculating pH, pOH, and finding concentrations of strong acids and bases in solutions. I asked him to do three more problems using whatever resources he needed (book, internet, notes, etc.) so that we could review them again at our next session. He said he will be re-taking this test next week sometime. I would like to do another session before that retake to review the harder concepts (and I will email his father about that scheduling)."
"Last night I worked with the students. First I did some review with one of the students and then worked with the other on some of her more difficult Advanced Algebra problems."
