Bellingham, WA Reading tutoring
Today, we finished the last chapter in the Ramona book! Then I quizzed the student on the topics covered: Who were the characters? What role did they play? What was the main idea of the book? What struggles did Ramona face? She was able to answer all these very well, and she showed high comprehension of the book. She had a positive attitude, and as a reward, we played a game for the last 7 minutes. Next week, we will start a Judy Moody book.

We started off with a one-minute fluency test on a 4th grade passage. The student read 60 words. After I modeled how to read it, he read 83 words the second time. Today we worked first on math, specifically fractions. We started by doing a few review problems of last session's concept, naming fractions. We reviewed the student's school homework and she did the word problem in depth exploring the concept of one whole when the numerator and denominator are the same. Then we moved onto reading, where she summarized quite well the story we read last session and explained the moral. Using her school homework as a starting place, we discussed the terms context and infer. Then she picked a book out of three to read and we began alternately reading pages aloud using context clues to understand unfamiliar words. She wrote on a whiteboard a three sentence summary of the first part of the story and dictated a prediction about what would happen next. We will finish the story next session.

The student clearly has internalized the reading comprehension skills we worked on last time. She was able to very thoroughly digest a reading assignment, taking concise notes as she identified main ideas of each paragraph. As we progressed, she got "stuck" less and less often and was doing quite well almost independently by the end. In the last few minutes, she also worked efficiently through a short math assignment, which posed no trouble for her.
