Bellingham, WA Phonics tutoring
Today, we spent a lot of time reviewing the student's spelling words. After some more time spent working on the words today, I feel that he has a better grasp on them. We also worked on his math homework, focusing on counting by tens and determining how many tens and ones were in a given number.

The student had a reading assignment in class that he couldn't do, but fortunately his teacher allowed him to take it home for completion. So I went over the work by helping him read and explain the passages of the story. He had to answer many critical thinking questions, which are areas that he struggles with. We read the story together and I explained the main idea for each part of the work; I allowed him to think about things he would do based on the story in order for it to make sense. He participated very well and answered the questions to the best of his ability.

Student A and I worked on basic reading practice. He read his three reading books and his library book. He needed help with consonant blends. He enjoys reading. We will continue to practice reading. With Student B, I reviewed the homework I gave him which were words that he did not know or had trouble pronouncing from his reading book. I had him practice spelling his words for this week. He had trouble with two words which we practiced. I had him read from his reading book. There were only two words that he did not know. I suggested that the family get a children's dictionary in order for him to learn to look up words that he do not know. He did well on his spelling test last week.

The student began by completing her homework, which was reading a text at her instructional level. We focused on phonics skills that she needed help with throughout the read and creating a chart visually showing the different skills. The session was spent getting to know her as well; after finding out about her interests, a sentence was dictated for her to record. Notes were taken on strengths and areas for improvements. She was very motivated and excited to work throughout the session and was very talkative and friendly. She needed a few focus prompts and was willing to work throughout the entire session.

During today's tutoring session, the student and I worked on reading and vocabulary acquisition. I began by reading a passage out loud to him, and he followed by reading it out loud to me. We focused on pacing, pausing at appropriate times throughout the passage. We also followed this same routine with a Maya Angelou poem during our session. Then, he used context clues to define a set of vocabulary words. We worked through this assignment together, and I clarified any unknown words for him. At the end of our session, he and I worked on a drawing activity that focused on bilateral coordination, which is an area of concern for him. Overall, our session went very well.

The student worked on his poet PowerPoint. He had done all of the research the day before so was ready to put his presentation together. I helped him set up the main ideas of the slide, something he needed very little guidance with. Then we worked out which bits of information to put in each section. He is very proficient with PowerPoint, and once he saw I was impressed, was eager to show me all the tricks he knew. This is due next Wednesday, so if he works on it throughout the week, we will use Tuesday's session to put the finishing touches on it.
