Session Summaries by German Tutors

Bellingham, WA German tutoring
Today the student and I worked for the first half hour of the session. We continued with our story, "Papageno," as I read passages out loud. She followed by reading the passages out loud, and then we went over any unfamiliar vocabulary. Finally, she translated the entire passage from German into English. I had her brother for the second half of the session, and we did the same exercises with "Papageno." Our next session is scheduled for next Thursday.

We looked at the homework for last week and reviewed vocabulary for modes of transportation, as well as the conjugation of "fahren." We then worked on daily routine, matching sentences to pictures, and then filling the appropriate verbs in the text on daily routine. I had her number the pictures based on her own routine, and then write simple sentences to describe it. For homework, I suggested she finish that exercise, and then practice explaining her daily routine out loud. I want to practice speaking about it at the next lesson.

We started the lesson by reviewing the vocabulary he worked on last week. He remembered a lot of words and his pronunciation is improving. He and I went through another part of the "family" chapter, covering vocabulary relating to relationships and personality and characteristics. He said it's easier for him to remember words after having me heard saying them rather than just reading them from the paper or using online flashcards. He'll work on today's session during the week and we'll review the vocabulary next Wednesday. For future chapters, the plan is to review them during the session, and then for him to take a copy home with him to work on.

We worked in depth on modal verbs and on the dativ and akusativ cases (direct-object indirect object). He seems to have these concepts in his grasp. For next session, he should make sure he either has homework or has notes from class for directed study.

We worked through chapter 8 in the textbook, which focused on getting around in the city using new verb conjugations. Then we reviewed the family tree with exercises, and also went through foods with building your own sentences. We are reviewing many verbs, and the student will review them and work through chapter 9 in the textbook. She is working hard to remember concepts, and we will be starting to speak more German during class.
