Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today with the student, we reviewed her last quiz and covered graphical symmetry. On her last quiz, she did not score very well and attributed it to a lack of preparedness. So, I went over everything she answered incorrectly with her and made sure she understood her mistakes and knew how to correct them. I also gave her additional test taking tips to help build her confidence and comfort during tests and quizzes. For her homework, she struggled most with graphical symmetry about the origin, and I helped her understand the concept in a way that worked for her, using her textbook and online resources. I told her to do as many extra practice problems from her textbook as she could. All in all, I have no concerns from this session and I look forward to the student continuing her work to succeed in this class."
"We worked on operations on functions, transformation of functions, domain and range, and graphing. Spencer needed the most help with operations, but understood quickly and did well with domain and range."
"The student and I reviewed order of operations and discussed homework problems related to that concept. We also did extra review problems from the textbook. We also reviewed solving several different algebraic equations. He seems to pick it up pretty well though sometimes makes mistakes when not writing each step as he solves a problem."
"Reviewed Coordinate algebra test covering conversion of quadratic equation from ax2 +bx +c to n(x-h)2 +k formats and "making the square", set-builder notation for range and domain of variables and functions and development of inverse functions."
"The student struggled with proportion word problems at school (i.e 80 is 12% of what number?). We went over the 2 ways she has seen to solve these problems. After she was comfortable with that we moved on to converting from fraction to decimal to percent. She had forgotten how to do it, so we did some refresher problems. After a couple of problems, she had no problem with converting anymore."
"Today was our first session. The student informed me that she just received her text book today and had already finished her homework, which was a worksheet, that she had no problem doing. We went over her starter problems she worked on in class, and did a couple more similar problems, which were mainly solving for x and solving for two variables with two equations. We then spent some time going over the equation of the line, slope, and graphing linear equations. We did some examples where she solved for slope, x-intercept and y-intercept, as well as graphing the equation. She did excellent on solving the equations for x, and showed some slight confusion between the slope and y-intercept in the equation, but as we did a couple more examples she was doing them correctly on her own. I will continue going over equations of the line in our next session, as well as any problems from her homework and class session."
"This session was mostly planning for the rest of the semester. We discussed the problems that the student has had in the past and what we would like to work on to help his performance in his Algebra course. Hopefully the study habits we try to get him used to will also carry over into his other classes."
"The student and I reviewed Algebra I concepts because he has a test this Friday. Specifically we covered absolute value graphs; how to determine the vertex and the symmetric points just by looking at the equation."
