I tested him on vocab he's learned and he has REALLY done a good job remembering all his words and knowing them well-- he immediately gives me the correct definition and rarely misses any words. For verbal, I feel like he is much more comfortable with passage based questions now, and only needs to improve getting the questions right when he does not know all the words. To help with that we went over a few from homework that he missed even though there were a couple in the answer choices he did know the meanings of. For writing, he does sometimes miss questions involving "no error" so we'll continue to work on that.

We worked on the Math section of the SAT. I think, even without any tutoring, she would score very well on this section. However, it never hurts to go back to the fundamentals. I jogged her memory on a few equations that had slipped her mind, many of which dealt with linear equations. As a result, she scored very well on a practice test that I prepared for her. We are in the fine tuning stage of her tutoring process, which will ultimately raise her score from 2000 to 2200.

We covered geometry, agreement errors and reading comp. For next time, the student will do normal vocab, read every day, complete one diagnostic for each section (and send scores) and read and complete exercises in the official study guide p 99-144, 196-209.

Yesterday the student and I spent most of the session on writing and math. We finished up a couple geometry problems I had pulled for last time, and again saw that the assessment really likes testing on parallel lines, in addition to triangles and circles. She recognized when she had to use the distance formula to solve a problem. This gave us the chance to go over how the distance formula is very nicely derived from the Pythagorean Theorem, which she understood well. Specifically for yesterday I pulled problems which had to do with proportions, percents, and ratios. These aren't hugely tested topics, but they undoubtedly come up at least a few times within a whole test. The main thing we went over here was keeping track of multiple steps of percentage increases or decreases, and how you can express, for example "x is decreased by 30%" as .7x, instead of finding .3 of x and subtracting that from x. For writing we went through several more questions using the strategy of her rewriting the sentence in her own words first, then looking for an answer which was the same, or at least addressed the same problems which she corrected in her version. This seems to be a really effective method because she has a naturally good understanding for what is grammatically correct, or at least what sounds right. We finished up with a short reading comprehension passage and it was a good exercise in finding very specific support in the passage to back up the correct answer. This is something that I am encouraging her to think about for every single reading comprehension question we do together. She is aiming to complete a full-length practice test this weekend, which I think she is in great shape for! On Tuesday we'll talk about that and address whatever she feels she needs to improve on based on the result. I also plan to pull a series of writing questions which have to do with comma placement, since this is a topic that has come up 2-3 times in the writing exercises we've done.

We went over questions mostly on number logic/ reasoning and geometry. The student was okay with arithmetic, but struggled with figuring out some of the steps to solve questions. We discussed a good book to use for SAT prep. I will also look for some old SAT prep work if I have any.
